Job summary
Come and join one of the UKs largest providers in complex care. We'd like you to join us as a Nurse Associate at our service Hunters Moor in Birmingham.

Main duties of the job
The Nursing Associate will work as part of the multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality, person centred care to individuals with complex neurological, spinal, and acquired brain injuries. The post holder will support Registered Nurses in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care, working within their scope of practice and professional standards. The Nursing Associate will contribute to the rehabilitation, recovery, and ongoing care of patients with varying levels of physical, cognitive, and respiratory needs. Experience in tracheostomy care is preferred, and the post holder will support the management of patients requiring specialist airway care while promoting safety, dignity, independence, and quality of life.

What you'll be working:

This role will be fully rotational, working across three distinct, yet complementary, services on one site.

What you'll be doing:

Key Responsibilities Clinical Care
Deliver safe, effective, and compassionate nursing care in accordance with organisational policies, procedures, and professional standards. Support patients with activities of daily living while promoting independence and rehabilitation goals. Undertake delegated clinical duties appropriate to competence and scope of practice. Specifically in regard to tracheostomy care and maintenance Monitor, record, and report changes in patients' physical, neurological, respiratory, and emotional wellbeing. Maintain accurate, timely, and professional clinical documentation. Support the implementation of individualised care plans and rehabilitation programmes.

Neurological and Spinal Injury Care
Assist in caring for patients with spinal cord injuries, acquired brain injuries, and complex neurological conditions. Observe and report changes in cognition, behaviour, mobility, communication, and neurological status. Support patients with specialist equipment including pressure-relieving devices, mobility aids, and positioning equipment. Assist with bowel, bladder, skin integrity, and pressure area management programmes. Promote patient dignity, choice, and independence throughout rehabilitation and long-term care.

Tracheostomy and Respiratory Care
Provide routine tracheostomy care in line with local policies, procedures, and competency requirements. Monitor respiratory status and tracheostomy sites, identifying and escalating concerns promptly. Perform suctioning and airway care where trained, assessed, and deemed competent. Support Registered Nurses in the care of patients with tracheostomies, respiratory compromise, or complex airway needs. Ensure emergency airway equipment is available, checked, and maintained as required. Recognise and escalate signs of respiratory distress, airway obstruction, infection, or clinical deterioration immediately.

Communication and Team Working
Work collaboratively with Registered Nurses, therapists, medical staff, and the wider multidisciplinary team. Participate actively in handovers, care reviews, and multidisciplinary discussions. Develop positive therapeutic relationships with patients, families, and carers. Support patients with communication difficulties arising from neurological injury or tracheostomy placement.

Patient Safety and Quality
Adhere to safeguarding, infection prevention and control, medication, health and safety, and organisational policies. Participate in risk assessment, incident reporting, and quality improvement activities. Support the delivery of high standards of clinical governance and patient-centred care. Recognise and escalate safeguarding concerns or clinical risks appropriately.

Professional Responsibilities
Practice within the Nursing Associate scope of practice and professional standards. Maintain professional registration and mandatory training requirements. Participate in supervision, appraisal, competency assessments, and continuing professional development. Act as a positive role model and contribute to a culture of learning, professionalism, and excellence in care.

  • Registered Nursing Associate qualification & current NMC Pin registration
  • A Legal right to work in the U.K.
  • Experience working in a healthcare setting supporting individuals with complex care needs.
  • Understanding of person-centred care, safeguarding, and rehabilitation principles.
  • Effective communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently within scope of practice and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of infection prevention and control practices.

Desirable
  • Experience caring for patients with spinal cord injuries, acquired brain injuries, or neurological conditions.
  • Experience in tracheostomy care and respiratory support.
  • Competency in suctioning and airway management.
  • Experience within rehabilitation, complex care, neurorehabilitation, or long-term care settings.
  • Knowledge of pressure area care, PEG feeding, catheter care, and neurological observation.
