Job summaryAn exciting opportunity has arisen for an inspirational clinician with
extensive experience working in the theatre environment to lead our Trust's
NatSSIPs 2 strategy. As the NatSSIPs Clinical Lead, you will leverage your firsthand knowledge of perioperative workflows to spearhead the standardization and sustainability of safe invasive procedures. By integrating human factors and quality improvement methodologies, you will embed a robust patient safety culture across all operating theatres and outpatient settings. Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, you will provide expert guidance, reduce clinical risk, and deliver board-level assurance for patient safety.
Main duties of the jobThe postholder will work as part of the Chief Medical Officer's team, working alongside relevant clinical leads and the Head of Patient Safety to ensure all relevant areas within the Trust meet the NAtSSIPs2 organisational and sequential standards. The post holder will be a senior clinician practising clinically within the invasive procedures domain with a comprehensive understanding of the NatSSIPs 2 guidance, the NHS Patient Safety Strategy and the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF).

Job responsibilitiesCore Duties:- Provide clinical leadership for the implementation, maintenance, and development of NatSSIPs/LocSSIPs across the organisation.
- Delivery of assurance against all NatSSIPs2 organisational and sequential standards.
- Reduction in avoidable patient safety incidents associated with invasive procedures.
- Development of a sustainable audit and assurance framework for invasive procedures.
- Strengthening patient involvement and co-production in procedural safety pathways.
- Act as the clinical authority and champion for safe invasive procedures
- Provide patient safety expertise/leadership within the hospital; demonstrating compassionate leadership, visibility and supporting the continued development of the patient safety culture
- Ensure NatSSIPs are embedded into local policy (LocSSIPs) and clinical practice
- Promote a strong safety culture, including speaking up, human factors awareness, and learning from incidents.
- Oversee the development, review, and approval of LocSSIPs in line with national guidance.
- Provide assurance to the Board / Quality & Safety Committees that NatSSIPs requirements are being met.
- Support preparation for external inspections and audits .
- Support the review of patient safety incidents related to invasive procedures under PSIRF
- Ensure learning from incidents is shared, embedded, and monitored.
- Monitor safety data, audits, and compliance metrics relating to NatSSIPs.
- Identify system risks and drive preventative and improvement actions.
- Ensure appropriate training, induction, and competency assessment for staff involved in invasive procedures.
- Promote consistent use of WHO Surgical Safety Checklist / NatSSIPs and LocSSIPs checklists.
- Support clinical teams to understand human factors, situational awareness, and teamwork.
- Develop and facilitate a multidisciplinary steering group for NatSSIPs
- Facilitate the development and updating of a Trust wide NatSSIPs policy, with ongoing monitoring and review of the policy, and auditing of compliance against the policy.
- Make informed decisions based on highly complex and sensitive information available from multiple sources, including patient safety incident data.
Service improvement- Lead or sponsor quality improvement initiatives to enhance procedural safety.
- Support standardisation of processes while allowing appropriate specialty variation.
- Encourage innovation and best practice aligned with national safety priorities.
- Support the implementation and embedding of all the NatSSIPs2 organisational and sequential standards.
- Recognise the links between systems that are safe for patients and systems that are safe for staff, and work closely with those leading improvements to staff safetY
Communications and Engagement- Engage with stakeholders at all levels to share best practices and ensure effective communication
- Act as the point of contact for NatSSIPs-related matters within the organisation.
- Communicate safety messages clearly and credibly to frontline staff and leaders.
- Advocate for patient safety at organisational and system levels.
- Support the development of processes that places patients at the centre of the safety pathway for invasive procedures and ensure they are fully engaged with the pathway
- Act as a champion for patients and their interests and involve the public and patients in the policy development and decision-making of organisational patient safety
Person SpecificationQualifications and Further TrainingEssential- Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (or CCT) by the time of taking up the post or be accredited for inclusion on the General Medical Council's Specialist Register
- Fully registered with the General Medical Council
- NHS Patient Safety Syllabus Level 1 and Level 2
Desirable- NHS Patient Safety Syllabus Level 3 / 4 - Patient Safety Specialist
ExperienceEssential- Providing direct clinical care within the invasive procedure's domain
- Experience of implementing NatSSIPs/LocSSIPs
- Medical and non-medical undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience
- Evidence of previous active participation in leadership and management activities
Desirable- oExperience as a leader to develop, test, implement and support a new way of working. oExperience of project management, driving reliable, sustainable improvement oPostgraduate certificate in education
KnowledgeEssential- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the professional code of conduct and guidance issued by the GMC and adhere to this.
Desirable- Responding to and reviewing incidents under the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework
SkillsEssential- Highly skilled in the use of NatSSIPs/LocSSIPs and the WHO Checklist to ensure pateint safety
Desirable- Strong educational portfolio to support the dissemination of training to a diverse, multi-professional workforce
