Assistive Technology Clinical Specialist

Job summary
This post is for an Assistive Technology Clinical Specialist - Occupational Therapist OR Clinical Scientist.

This is an opportunity to join a dedicated, motivated, exciting and supportive specialised assistive technology team. Our team has an excellent national and international reputation for quality, innovation and research and development. We deliver regional services for communication aids and environmental control across the Yorkshire and Humber region and are commissioned as an NHS specialised service.

We are looking to recruit an OT or Clinical Scientist experienced in assessing for and making recommendations for specialised assistive technology. The role involves working across Yorkshire and the Humber in assessing the needs of children and adults around the use of environmental controls (including computer access equipment) and communication aids. You will work with our in-house AT clinical specialists (OTs, SLTs, Clinical Scientists). Technologists and company representatives to ensure this is effectively provided. You will also work with local teams in delivering training.

We will consider applicants wishing to apply for this as a training post (Annex 21 of Agenda for Change). You would be expected to develop the AT knowledge, experience and skills required through supported independent working over a period of around a year and evidenced against our competency framework. Main duties of the job
As part of a regional specialised Assistive Technology (AT) service from Barnsley Hospital you will:
  • Carry out client assessments and make recommendations related to the provision of the specialised services offered by the AT team.
  • Carry out these interventions throughout Yorkshire and Humber.
  • Independently manage a caseload of clients to whom the post holder is responsible for the assessment and provision of appropriate equipment.
  • Train in-house staff, students and external staff throughout the services region in assistive technology.
  • Provide specialist clinical input to the provision of the Assistive Technology service.
  • Share with the service leads responsibility for co-ordination of the work of Assistive Technology Technical, Admin and Assistant staff.
  • Contribute to device evaluations, equipment management and other tasks required to ensure effective provision of these services.
  • Take part in research projects, in particular research projects in collaboration with the University of Sheffield related to Assistive Technology, as required and appropriate.

Skills and Abilities
Essential
  • Significant relevant clinical skills gained during a postgraduate period.
  • Ability to carry out complex assessments of client needs and provide and monitor technological solutions. This may involve specialist assessment for mobility, communication, computer access and environmental control access for clients with severe disabilities.
  • Ability to problem solve complex (assistive technology) clinical problems.
  • Skills to promote the service to the public and other health, education and social service professionals.
  • Ability to apply research methods
  • Have a high level of computer literacy.
  • Understand the need for confidentiality.
  • Awareness of health and safety requirements.

Desirable
  • Have electronic instrumentation and mechanical engineering experience and the skills to manipulate fine tools for the adjustment of electronic and mechanical devices.
  • Have IT skills necessary for software programming, creating novel IT applications, configuration of software appropriate to client needs

Experience
Essential
  • Significant experience in the field of applying electronic assistive technology in clinical practice
  • If applying as a training role, candidates would expect to achieve the level of experience, knowledge and skills within a maximum of two years of appointment.

  • Experience of project management

Qualifications
Essential
  • State registered as an Occupational Therapist with the Health and Care Professions Council (UK)
  • Further relevant qualification and/or experience equivalent to Masters degree level.

  • Relevant PhD
  • Clinical educator accreditation
