Job summary
Although this position is a 12 months fixed-term contract, the actual contract duration will be adjusted to account for the time taken to advertise the post, complete the hiring process, and finalise pre-employment checks. This means the contract will begin when the candidate starts the role and may be slightly shorter than 12 months.

First opening over a hundred years ago, our team at Whipps Cross have one of the busiest A&E departments in the country with more than 152,000 patients attending each year.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Division of Surgery & Cancer in the recruitment of a highly motivated and dynamic band 6 nurse for the Surgical Assessment Unit for a 12-month secondment. The successful candidate must be an innovative, hardworking and enthusiastic adult nurse with a broad range of skills and experiences. You must possess and be able to demonstrate excellent leadership and management skills. We are seeking to appoint a compassionate and caring nurse who will be able to work closely with the ward manager to deliver outstanding care for the patients in East London & beyond.

Main duties of the job
  • Responsible for supporting the Ward Manager in the delivery of consistently high standards of care to meetthe service needs of the patients and the Trust objectives.
  • The post holder will be a role model of the BartsHealth values and key behaviors to all members of the team and the wider MDT. As a senior member of theWard team, the band 6 will be a competent confident practitioner who can care for, and manage thedeteriorating and acutely ill patient, escalating concerns to the appropriate medical and outreach teams.
  • Thepost holder must have competent management and facilitation skills in order to coordinate and supervise theactivity of ward staff, promote multi-disciplinary working and foster a supportive, learning environment. In theabsence of the Ward Manager the post holder will assume responsibility for the effective operation of theward, including audit and budgetary roles, that the ward environment is maintained in a clean safe way, andall staff follow the Trusts infection control policy, dress code and all other Trust policies and protocols
  • As a Registered Nurse the post holder is expected to consistently act in accordance with the NMC Code ofProfessional Conduct.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered Nurse

Desirable
  • BSc or working towards

Experience
Essential
  • Minimum 1 years' experience within a surgical setting at a Band 5
  • Evidence of continual professional development
  • Experience at leading shifts
  • Mentorship, staff development , teaching and staff support

Desirable
  • Previous experience at band 6 level

Knowledge
Essential
  • mentorship course or equivalent
  • Expanded clinical skills - IV drug administration, cannulation, phlebotomy etc
  • Standard setting and quality assurance
  • Intermediate Life Support provider or equivalent ? Current nursing practice developments and NHS developments
  • BSc or working towards
  • care of the acutely ill adult or equivalent

Desirable
  • Specialist course or equivalent level of skill
  • Educated at degree level or equivalent
  • Importance of cost containment and budgetary management
  • Advanced Life Support provider

Skills

  • Effective communication skills and courteous attitude with patients, relatives and MDT, promoting team, building and good working relations

  • Experience in Patient Controlled Analgaesia & Epidural infusions
  • Experience to artificial feeding; TPN & PEG feeding
  • Experience in Negative Pressure wound dressings & complex wound healing.
