Locum Consultant Endoscopist - 12-Month Fixed Term

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 12-month Fixed Term Locum Consultant Endoscopist to join our established team of 14 Gastroenterology and Hepatology Consultants at Whipps Cross Hospital, part of Barts Health NHS Trust. This role is well suited to candidates who have recently achieved CCT as well as more experienced clinicians seeking a focused endoscopy post. Informal enquiries are warmly welcomed.

Main duties of the job
Our Endoscopy Unit hosts BCSP lists, VCE, and has contributed to validation work for Colon Capsule, Cytosponge, and is currently trialing Hemopill. We also have a dedicated clinical trials facility.

About the Role
The post holder will take a lead role in delivering outpatient and inpatient endoscopy, contributing:

• 5 diagnostic upper and lower GI endoscopy sessions per week
• 1 outpatient clinic, with associated triage, Advice & Refer, and administrative duties

Participation in departmental meetings, MDTs, audit, and service improvement is expected and encouraged. Where possible, we will seek to accommodate individual areas of specialist interest to ensure a rewarding and professionally satisfying year at Whipps Cross.

This post does not require participation in:

• The Gastroenterologist of the Week ward rota
• The out of hours GI bleed rota
• The General Internal Medicine take

However, candidates wishing to contribute to any of these rotas may do so by mutual agreement.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

• MRCP or Equivalent
• Full GMC Registration
• JAG accreditation for diagnostic OGD and colonoscopy

Desirable

• JAG TTT Accreditation
• Higher Research Degree

Academic Achievements
Desirable

• Good track record of research in a related field
• Evidence of active research with evidence of winning grants or publishing peer reviewed articles
• Evidence of giving successful presentations

Experience
Essential

• Independent practice delivering safe, high volume endoscopy lists
• Experience managing complications (bleeding, perforation)
• Experience running outpatient gastroenterology clinics

Desirable

• Experience supervising trainees or non medical endoscopists
• Experience supporting JAG audit cycles

Knowledge
Essential

• Detailed knowledge of Gastroenterology and of the specialist skills required for this post
• Knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit and demonstrable commitment to improving quality of care to patients
• Understanding of modern medical curricula and commitment to life-long learning

Skills
Essential

• Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team (clinical and management)
• Ability to teach medical students and junior medical and nursing staff

Desirable

• Ability to manage staff and resources effectively

• Interest in Medical Audit

• An understanding of techniques to improve efficiency and productivity of clinical processes
