Job summary
As Named Professional for Safeguarding Adults you will be the operational safeguarding lead for the hospital, promoting early identification and management of safeguarding concerns through leadership, expertise, education and best practice. You will:
  • Act as the hospital's expert on safeguarding adults, including self-neglect, domestic abuse, the Mental Capacity Act (MCA), Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) and PREVENT.
  • Take lead operational responsibility for MCA at hospital level, working with the Associate Director of Safeguarding at Group level.
  • Line manage the hospital safeguarding adults team, including appraisals, supervision and professional development.
  • Provide expert advice and support to clinical staff, ensuring concerns are reported and escalated through the right channels.
  • Lead the dissemination and implementation of safeguarding policies, training and the annual audit schedule, in line with the Care Act 2014.
  • Contribute to Safeguarding Adult Reviews (SARs) and Domestic Homicide Reviews (DHRs), sharing learning and monitoring action plans with Directors of Nursing.
  • Manage a delegated budget and represent the hospital at multi-agency conferences, panels and the local Safeguarding Adults Board (SAB).

Main duties of the job
The post holder is an integral member of the Whipps Cross safeguarding team. They will carry the Named Nurse for Adult Safeguarding function for three days per week, working in job-share partnership with the substantive Named Professional for Safeguarding Adults to ensure continuous senior safeguarding cover across the working week. For the remaining two days, the post holder will support the development of the hospital's safeguarding practice working collaboratively with the wider trust safeguarding professional team to achieve the trust all age safeguarding strategy.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
  • Current professional registration: RMN, RGN, Social Worker or AHP
  • First level degree in a relevant subject
  • Master's degree in a relevant subject (or working towards), or developed specialist adult safeguarding knowledge to master's level acquired through significant experience or in-role training
  • Recognised teaching, mentoring or practice education qualification (e.g. PGCert Healthcare Education, Practice Assessor, mentorship)
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development

  • Additional safeguarding qualification (e.g. MCA/DoLS practitioner, PREVENT WRAP train-the-trainer, Level 3/4 safeguarding)

Experience
  • Substantial experience in a senior role (Band 7 or above)
  • Adult safeguarding practice, including MCA/DoLS and PREVENT
  • Designing and delivering safeguarding or related clinical training to multidisciplinary audiences
  • Providing structured and ad-hoc clinical supervision to nursing or allied health colleagues
  • Conducting investigations using recognised methodologies (e.g. RCA)
  • Leading practice development or quality improvement initiatives in a clinical setting
  • Working with multi-agency teams

  • Using incident reporting systems

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of completing external partnership reviews (SAR, DARDR
  • Principles of adult learning theory and approaches to clinical education

  • Knowledge of legislation relating to children's safeguarding

Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to manage a delegated budget

  • Ability to produce high-quality reports, papers and board-level briefings
