Job summary

Are you passionate about ICU (Intensive Care Unit) - Critical Care Nursing ?We are seeking for a motivated and compassionate Band 5 nurse to join our dynamic and supportive Critical Care team. You will provide high quality, patient centred care to critically ill patients requiring level 2 & level 3 support in line with GPICS standards.

The role is suitable for experienced Band 5 nurses who have been working in an acute ward on an acute hospital setting with an interest in Critical Care. A structured induction and ongoing education programme will be provided to support development.

You will be an excellent communicator and have a positive attitude towards flexibility and change. Interpersonal skills are essential and you will be an asset to the team demonstrating the ability to be forward thinking and passionate about delivering high standards of care.

It is a really exciting time to be joining our ICU team as we recently moved to brand new facilities, the new ICU will be able to accommodate up to 22 patients in a modern spacious environment with up to date technology supporting the nursing team to deliver excellent care - so come and join us ! We are a member of the East of England Critical Care Network and participate in Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre so we can help to contribute to improving outcomes in critical care.

Main duties of the job

You will assess, plan, deliver and evaluate high standards of personalised nursing care, to critically ill patients requiring level 2 and level 3 support, ensuring highest level of customer service. We will offer you an exciting and challenging work environment. We are committed to the training and development of our staff with the opportunity to complete the 60credits Intensive Care Course, with PDN and nurse mentors support.

Monitor and interpret physiological parameters and respond appropriately to patient deterioration &escalate concerns. Safely manage critical care equipment including invasive monitoring, infusion devices and other life saving devices in line with local policies.

Administer medications in accordance with Trust guidelines and NMC standards. Adhere to GPICS standards, infection prevention, safeguarding, and health and safety requirements.

Collaborative with the MDT to support clinical decision making . Support & communicate with dignity and respect to colleagues, patients and relatives. Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation and conduct concise handover.Participate in education, complete competencies, audit, and quality improvement activities .Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) and contribute to formulation of own objectives and personal development plan.Familiar with basic physiology, & have a theoretical knowledge base for acute nursing.

Job responsibilities

Assess patient care needs and the development and implementation of programmes of patient care and participate in the evaluation of these.

To ensure a high standard of nursing care is performed at all times and assist in the review and regular update of these standards.Ability to recognise and respond appropriately to changes in the patients condition and safety.Adhere to all Trust Policies to maintain professional, clinical and patient safety.Ability to administer oral drugs safely and independently and that they are administered in line with the NMC and Trust Policy guidelines.Be aware of the principles of infection control and the prevention of cross infection in relation to patient care and the clinical environment.

Be able to communicate basic care information and answer queries to patients, their relatives/carers and the multidisciplinary team members.To undertake intravenous drug therapy administration following a training programme which will assess the competencies and practical levels required to achieve safe working within the Trust policies and procedures.Care and control of medication and controlled drugs used for patient care, being aware of the systems used for safe administration and the ordering and maintenance of stock.

Qualifications
Essential
  • RGN with current NMC registration
  • Degree in Nursing
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development (CPD)

Desirable
  • Critical Care course
  • Mentorship or teaching qualification

Experience
Essential
  • Experience of working in an acute ward in an acute hospital setting
  • Knowledge & understanding of safe evidence based nursing care
  • Understanding of infection prevention practices, safeguarding & risk management
  • Completion of preceptorship

Desirable
  • Experience of taking charge of a ward area
  • Awareness of GPICS standards
