Job summary
The post holder will support the Liaison Team with input to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, the local DGH. Starting from the single point of access, liaison nursing staff will screen referrals and allocate appropriately to adult, older adult or alcohol liaison Band 6 nurses. Sometimes assessments are carried out jointly including with the team Occupational Therapist or Specialty doctor. The post holder will help with assessments where required and supervise assessments helping with diagnosis/formulation of patients' problems and ensuring a clear management plan is available and well documented in patients' notes and communicated with the relevant teams.

Ensuring an updated management plan is available for all patients open to the liaison team would be an important function of the daily board round. On average the liaison team receives approximately 300 referrals per month with equal distribution between day-time and night-time referrals. All of these referrals will be seen by the Nursing team, overseen by the post holder.

Main duties of the job
General Duties
  • To manage, appraise and give professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed between consultant colleagues and the medical director and in accordance with the Health Board's personnel policies and procedures. This may include assessing competences under the Modernising Medical Careers framework.
  • To ensure that junior medical staff, working with the post holder operate within the parameters of the New Deal and are Working Time Directive compliant.
  • To undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients.
  • To record clinical activity accurately and comprehensively and submit this promptly to the necessary department.
  • To participate in service and business planning activity for the locality and as appropriate, for the whole mental health service.
  • To participate in annual appraisal for consultants.
  • To attend and participate in the academic programme of the Health Board, including lectures and seminars as part of the internal CPD programme.
  • To maintain professional registration with the General Medical Council, Mental Health Act 1983 Section 12(2) approval, to work within the legal framework of the Mental Health (Wales) Measure 2010 and to abide by professional codes of conduct.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • GMC Specialist Registration or obtaining CCT within 6 months of interview date
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCPsych or equivalent qualification approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists
  • Welsh Approved Clinician status or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment
  • Approved under section 12 or able to achieve within 3 months of appointment

Desirable
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management

Experience
Essential
  • Evidence of training in the core and evidence in working with adults, older adults and patients with substance misuse difficulties
  • Evidence of having delivered postgraduate teaching
  • Evidence of having delivered multidisciplinary teaching

Desirable
  • Experience in leading a multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of community psychiatric practice
  • Experience of teaching medical students
  • Evidence of having undertaken a relevant audit project
  • Evidence of research in mental health care
  • A good knowledge base of medicine and qualification to highlight training in the interphase between physical and mental health
