Job Summary
The Associate Medical Director works in partnership with the Associate Director of Operations to provide senior medical leadership and joint accountability for clinical governance, quality, safety, clinical effectiveness and financial management across the designated service portfolio. The role ensures that evidence-based, high-quality multidisciplinary clinical care is delivered in line with professional standards and Trust strategy, while supporting service transformation, development and innovation. The postholder provides medical leadership assurance to the Executive Medical Director and represents the service internally and externally on clinical matters.

Main Duties of the Job
The Associate Medical Director leads clinical governance within the service area, including setting quality objectives, monitoring clinical outcomes, overseeing incidents, complaints and learning, and ensuring service user and carer feedback informs improvement. The role oversees the management of clinical leads and the medical workforce, including job planning, appraisal, supervision and performance management, ensuring alignment with service priorities. Working jointly with operational leadership, the postholder contributes to budget setting, financial oversight and contract delivery, and provides clinical leadership for service improvement and transformation. The role also strengthens clinician-to-clinician engagement with primary care, commissioners and partner organisations, contributes to corporate clinical strategy, and provides clinical advice to the Executive Team and Trust committees.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Experience as senior medical leader within mental health services
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring others

Desirable
  • Evidence of successful leadership at service or divisional level

Knowledge and Skills
Essential
  • Excellent understanding of clinical governance and the process of developing and implementing evidence-based practice
  • Able to work as part of an SLT to provide strategic leadership and support joint decision making and action delivery
  • Ability to work present complex information, working across corporate services to gather information for presentations and reports

Personal Qualities
Essential
  • Demonstrate commitment to continuing professional development.
