An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated assistant psychologist to join Assertive Outreach services in Birmingham and Solihull.

Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust has 6 Assertive Outreach Teams (AOTs), forming part of our Integrated Community Care and Recovery service. This is a Band 4, fixed term post starting on or after 13.7.26 and ending on 12.7.2027 (based with Handsworth Assertive Outreach Team).) The post holder will join the specialist multidisciplinary teams providing intensive, flexible, and holistic support to people with complex psychosis or bipolar disorder who have been reluctant to engage with mainstream services. They will also be warmly welcomed into a well-established and supportive team of psychologists working across Assertive Outreach and Steps to Recovery inpatient rehabilitation services.

The post holder will be working under the supervision of a clinical psychologist and will receive regular individual clinical supervision as well as being able to access peer support through the Assistant Psychologists Group and assistant psychologist reflective practice groups. There is also a comprehensive CPD training programme which they will have access to.

We welcome applications from Individuals with an upper second-class psychology degree who are eligible for graduate membership of the BPS and who are interested in pursuing a career in clinical or counselling psychology.

Main duties of the job
AOTs use a well coordinated, team-based approach. The successful applicant will be assisting with the delivery and evaluation of psychological services to service users and families within the AO team. This will include working with individuals, providing structured low-intensity psychological interventions under the supervision of a clinical psychologist, as well as supporting clinical psychologists in the provision of more complex assessments and therapeutic interventions for individuals, families, and groups. There may be the opportunity to contribute to interventions with teams, comprehensive psychological assessments through the administration and scoring of questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and psychometric assessments. There will be opportunities to assist with the development and delivery of teaching and training packages to other staff groups and the honorary assistant psychologist group.

The post holder will work in conjunction with team members from other disciplines and contribute to multi-disciplinary discussions and meetings. The post holder will support the service with the Assertive Outreach Service evaluation project and may also participate in the collection, analysis, and presentation of data for other audit and service evaluation projects.

Qualifications
Essential

• Upper 2nd class Honours degree or higher in psychology
• Entitlement to graduate membership of the British Psychological Society

Desirable

• Further post graduate training in relevant areas of professional psychology, mental health practice and/or research design and analysis

Experience
Essential

• Experience of work with people with mental health problems or disabilities or other relevant problems or disabilities (e.g. learning disabilities)

Desirable

• Paid work in a setting providing direct care
• Experience of working with people with a serious mental illness (e.g. schizophrenia)
• Previous experience of working as an honorary or paid assistant psychologist
• Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team

Knowledge and Skills
Essential

• A high level of interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written).
• Ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with colleagues, service users and carers
• Knowledge of research methodology , design and data analysis commensurate with an honours degree in psychology

Desirable

• Ability to write articulate and comprehensible reports, letters and other correspondence
• Ability to use databases and carry out data analysis, using statistical programmes such as SPSS
