Job summary
The Toucan West Midlands CAMHS Provider Collaborative (WMCPC) is seeking to recruit a Consultant Psychiatrist who is committed to working with children and young people with complex mental health needs. This post will provide the medical leadership within a forming team who are transforming access to/from T4 services.

The Consultant will provide a central West Midlands system role delivering several psychiatric assessments for a caseload of complex patients. You will be taking a lead role with a strong team of clinical nurse specialists together you will be providing a coordinated approach to undertaking psychiatric & medical risk management of CYP referred to and step down fromT4. The Consultant will join the IROC team, contributing to the continuous development of the exciting transformation of these services.

Main duties of the job
  • Consultant Psychiatrist input to the IROC Team.
  • To assess and treat patients presenting with complex psychological, behaviours and emotional needs and who are being deprived of their liberty for their safety. This may include: Psychiatric assessment of patients. Working within the MDT to develop formulation of complex cases with medical and psychiatric needs. To contribute to risk assessment and management in liaison with the residential team. Treating and monitoring of psychiatric aspects of mental illness, including core psychopathology and psychiatric co-morbidities
  • A further component of the post is to maintain links with Psychiatric and secure inpatient settings to build positive working relationships, to prevent unnecessary hospital admission and safe discharge planning if required with other members of the WMCPC team.
  • The post holder will be required to be approved under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act (MHA). He / She will be expected to be able to undertake MHA assessments as appropriate.
  • Working in collaboration with the wider multidisciplinary team and provide clinical and medical leadership with the wider Provider collaborative.
  • He/she will provide supervision to any junior medical staff allocated to the team.
  • Contribute to WMCPC research and development.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered medical practitioner (GMC)
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, or equivalent qualification
Desirable
  • Other relevant clinical or academic qualifications
  • Experience of leadership position

Knowledge and experience
Essential
  • Higher training in Child & Adolescent or Adult Psychiatry in approved training posts for a minimum of three years
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register, CCT or within 6 months of a CCT
  • Approval under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act
  • Approved Clinician status
Desirable
  • Specialist training and experience in the management of eating disorders
  • Experience of assessment of CYP in crisis

PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE
Essential
  • Ability to supervise and train junior medical staff
  • Ability to work with patients aged 13-18
  • Ability to take a lead in multidisciplinary team
  • A broad range of experience in Child & Adolescent or Adult psychiatry and working with the multi- disciplinary teams
  • Experience of assessment, treatment and medical monitoring of patients with an eating disorder
  • Experience of working in a community mental health setting
  • Able to meet duties under the MHA, including patients with Eating Disorders
  • Experience of carrying out clinical audit and research.
Desirable
  • Experience of working within a specialist community teams including eating disorder and urgent care teams
  • Supervision and teaching of colleagues from other disciplines
  • Published research in peer reviewed journals
  • Evidence of ability to initiate clinical audit projects
  • Ability to contribute to service development

PERSONAL SKILLS / ABILITIES AND ATTRIBUTES

  • Ability to travel across the city for work purposes. Valid driver's license and access to a car daily for work purposes
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including verbal, written and presentation skills, together with excellent listening skills including facilitator

  • High energy levels, an innovative approach and ability to inspire and enthuse others.
