Job summaryAn exciting opportunity to work as a Consultant Paediatric Interventional Radiologist is available in the Department of Radiology. The appointee will primarily work within the Radiology Department of Birmingham Children's Hospital joining an existing establishment of 13 diagnostic consultant paediatric radiologists and 1 full time consultant paediatric interventional radiologist. This is a part time3- PA post.
Main duties of the jobThe successful applicant should be trained in all aspects of paediatric interventional radiology. This post has been developed to support our currentpaediatric interventional radiologistsand the other diagnostic radiologists who help support the service. The paediatric interventional radiology service provides support to many specialties including liver/liver transplantation, urology, generalsurgery, rheumatology, dermatology, oncology and the primary muscle and bone tumour service. The applicant will be expected to be able to perform both vascular and non-vascular IR procedures to help support these specialties within the organisation. Particularlyexpertisein liver and vascular IR is desirable. The IR service is also currently supported by SLAs with consultants who work in adult local/regional centres. Currently neuro IR is supported by an SLA from the regional adult neurointerventional service. At present there is no robust on-call rota for paediatric IR. The applicant would be expected to contribute to the development of an on-call rota. There will be an expectation to contribute to the MDTs requiring regular IR input, including reno-vascular, vascular malformations,urologyand liver surgery. This post will have both dedicated interventional radiology time and clinic time to help support and manage the IR workload.

Job responsibilitiesThe new consultant contractcomprises3Programmed Activities (PAs) (equivalent to 4 hours), of which2.5PAs are for direct clinical care (DCC) and0.5are for supporting activities (SPA).Job Plans are reviewed annually at the time of consultant appraisal which occurs between April and October. The successful post holder will beallocateddirect clinical care sessions in paediatric interventional radiology, paediatric interventionalclinicsand MDTS. The service is supported flexibly by SLA arrangements with regional centres and bynon IRradiologists where necessary.The following provisional timetable will form the basis for discussion with the successful applicants. Notall ofthe DCC sessions will involve formal imaging lists.
SPA sessions are provided to ensure that yearly appraisal targets can be met (CPD etc). In addition to this there are numerous roles in the department that have SPA allocation and there is an expectation that the individual will undertake one of these roles as part of the SPA activitiesegRPC chairman, educational supervisor, modality lead, audit lead etc
A provisional timetablefor the3-PA contract includes:
- 2.5 PAs for Interventional radiology theatre/clinic
- 0.5 SPA
Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Full GMC registration
- Inclusion on the Specialist Register or eligible for inclusion within 6 months of interview.
Desirable- Higher degree
- Fellowship/membership of a medical/surgical college.
Relevant experienceEssential- Training and experience which fulfils the requirements of the RCR document on subspecialty training in Paediatric Radiology.
Desirable- Training in a recognised paediatric centre of excellence.
- Fellowship in Paediatric Radiology.
- Attendance at a recognised management course.
Interests and motivationEssential- A special interest in Paediatric Radiology.
- Publications and/or presentations related to Paediatric Radiology.
Desirable- A proven interest and experience in audit, research and teaching.
Personal qualitiesEssential- Proven commitment to team work with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
