Job summary
We are offering a permanent Band 6 OT opportunity working with older people with mental health needs in the community.

You will need to have a strong interest and passion for using OT assessment and intervention to help people live well with dementia and/or recover from mental ill health in a community setting.

You will have opportunities to hone your OT skills with this rewarding client group using cognitive rehabilitation interventions, community group based interventions e.g. Greenspace and Walking Group and 1:1 interventions to reach individual goals.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will:
  • use evidence based and client centred practice to assess, plan, implement and evaluate one to one and group based interventions within community settings, providing Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment interventions to older adults with mental health needs.
  • Manage a defined caseload using evidence based/client centred practice to assess, plan, implement and evaluate interventions.
  • Work as a senior member of a multidisciplinary team, providing advice tothe multidisciplinary team as required.
  • Support leadership and provide clinical supervision to junior staff and undertake a practice placement educator role; the post holder will be expected to allocate work to OT Assistant Practitioners, Band 5 Occupational Therapist, and provide ongoing support on a daily basis, as well as supervision and appraisal.

About us
The OT team is well respected within the ECMHTOA and Memory Assessment Service alike and consists of an OT Lead, a band 5 OT and OTAPS.

You will also have opportunities to work closely with other members of the ECMHTOA and Memory Assessment Service to help inform a diagnosis of dementia as well as post diagnostic interventions.

Job responsibilities
Main responsibilities are:
  • To provide specialist OT assessment and interventions which are evidence based and have clear, measurable outcomes to older adults with mild, moderate and complex mental health needs in a variety of community locations.
  • To be responsible for the assessment of occupational therapy needs. To formulate individualised management and treatment plans to address occupational needs.
  • To utilise a wide range of skills to deliver a specialised programme of care, using a range of tools based upon the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO).
  • To accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of service users and organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and time available, contributing effectively to pathways of care.
  • To deliver occupational therapy interventions in a variety of community environments, which may include conditions which are unhygienic or hostile.
  • To plan and implement individual and /or group interventions in collaboration with the service users to meet identified occupational needs.
  • To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment for service users with multiple and personality disorder needs in order to measure outcomes and ensure effective interventions.

Person Specification
Education and qualifications and experience
Essential
  • Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Evidence of registration with the HCPC
  • Post graduate training relevant to mental health
  • Use of a range of assessment tools to plan treatment and recovery
  • Significant post registration experience of working with older adults with mental health needs
  • Experience of working in community settings

Desirable
  • To demonstrate commitment to maintaining statutory and mandatory training.
  • Evidence of post graduate training in leadership and or management
  • Significant experience of supervising junior staff and of being a placement educator
