Description

Number of opportunities: 1
Salary: £26,000 (Not flexible)
Closing date: 26/10/2026

This is a 12-month paid internship starting September 2027. The role is head office based requiring a minimum of 2 days a week to be worked from our office in Winnersh.

INTRODUCING THE OPPORTUNITY
Join Clinical Development Operations for a 12-month internship split equally between Trial Patient & Site Engagement and Feasibility & Planning. You will help bring patient, caregiver and trial-site perspectives into the way clinical trials are designed and planned, while learning how data and local knowledge are used to assess whether a study can be delivered successfully. Working with colleagues across the UK and global teams, you will support meaningful projects, analyse and organise information, and help turn insights into clear recommendations. This is an opportunity to see how different functions work together to make trials more practical for participants and sites and to help medicines reach patients sooner.

WHAT YOU WILL DO
  • Spend approximately 50% of your time supporting Trial Patient & Site Engagement and 50% supporting Feasibility & Planning, with a clear placement plan across both teams.
  • Support the collection, organisation and analysis of patient, caregiver and site insights to inform trial design, recruitment, retention and the overall trial experience.
  • Help develop and maintain Trial Patient & Site Engagement plans, trackers, presentations, guidance and learning materials, and support selected engagement projects.
  • Contribute to feasibility activities by reviewing data and country or site feedback, summarising key risks and opportunities, and supporting clear, evidence-based recommendations.
  • Support work to connect patient and site insights with feasibility processes, including questionnaires, feedback loops and continuous-improvement activities.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across trial, country, medical, data and operational teams, and communicate progress and findings clearly to different audiences.
  • Use Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Excel, PowerPoint and approved data or survey systems to organise information, track actions and create high-quality outputs.
  • Take ownership of agreed projects and contribute practical ideas that improve how insights are captured, shared and used in clinical trial planning.

WHAT YOU WILL GAIN
You will gain a practical understanding of how clinical trials are designed, assessed and delivered, and how patient and site perspectives can improve trial quality and feasibility. You will build experience in qualitative and quantitative analysis, project coordination, stakeholder engagement and communicating complex information clearly. By working across two connected teams, you will also develop a broad network and an end-to-end view of clinical trial planning, with opportunities to contribute to projects that may influence future ways of working.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM A BOEHRINGER INGELHEIM INTERNSHIP
  • Meaningful work and real responsibilities from the start, with opportunities to contribute to projects that matter.
  • Joining with a large cohort of exceptional students, you will receive a clear placement plan setting out key projects, milestones and your learning goals for the year.
  • Support from your manager, your team and HR, with regular feedback and development conversations.
  • Learning opportunities beyond the role, including workshops, networking, career insights and exposure to different parts of the business.
  • Access to coaching, mentoring and online learning resources, including Boehringer’s virtual University.
  • The opportunity to build professional confidence, workplace skills and a network across the organisation.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Currently studying for a degree in life sciences, healthcare, psychology, business, data science or another relevant subject, and completing a placement year as part of the course.
  • A minimum of three A levels at grades ABB, or equivalent.
  • The right to work in the UK for the full duration of the internship.
  • The ability to travel independently to the usual place of work and, where required, to other sites.
  • An interest in clinical research, healthcare, patient experience, data-informed decision-making or project delivery.

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience of analysing information or data and presenting clear findings through university work, employment or extracurricular activities.
  • Experience of working on a team project, coordinating activities, conducting research or gathering feedback from different people.
  • Familiarity with Excel, PowerPoint, surveys or data-visualisation tools. Training will be provided.

SKILLS AND BEHAVIOURS
  • Communicates clearly and professionally in writing and conversation.
  • Works collaboratively, builds positive relationships and contributes own ideas proactively.
  • Organises tasks, manages time and meets agreed deadlines.
  • Takes ownership of learning, asks questions and responds positively to feedback.
  • Adapts to changing priorities and approaches work with curiosity and initiative.
  • Uses AI appropriately to deliver work. Confident with Microsoft Office and is willing to learn new systems and technology.
  • Acts professionally and follows relevant policies, procedures, legal obligations and health, safety and environmental requirements.
