Job summaryAn exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Alcohol Nurse Specialist team at Bristol NHS Foundation Trust.
We are looking to recruit a Band 6 nurse to work across the Trust, however, mainly based at the BRI site. The post holder will be involved in assessing patients across the trust with Alcohol Use Disorder, providing support and advice around safe management of alcohol withdrawals and ongoing recovery support to patients and relatives. Excellent communication and time management skills are vital.
Working closely with the multi-disciplinary team to help manage the care of inpatients.
The post holder will have direct contact with inpatients, carers and staff to provided teaching, practical training and troubleshooting.
You will have ample opportunity to increase your knowledge and skills in all aspects of care for patients with alcohol use disorder and associated conditions.
Mentorship will be provided by our existing experienced band 7 nurses. There will be opportunity to attend and apply for academic courses to further your career.
Future implementation of a 7-day service, weekend working will be expected and the opportunity to undertake alcohol nurse clinics trust wide (BRI, SBCH and WGH).
Main duties of the job- Demonstrate professionalism, politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in providing compassionate person-centred care for patients, relatives, colleagues and visitors
- To work as a member of the Alcohol Specialist Nursing Team; as well as an autonomous practitioner, using the specialist knowledge and clinical skills required to assess, manage and support patients admitted with alcohol withdrawal and alcohol-related health conditions
- Provide specialist nursing advice, education and support to patients, their families and carers for those whose alcohol use is contributing to, or placing them at risk of, alcohol-related liver disease.
- Act as a specialist resource in the care of patients with complex alcohol-related and hepatology needs, ensuring a high standard of care from presentation to hospital through to discharge
- Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated, safe and effective patient care. Contribute to the support and development of colleagues and maintain patient and carer confidentiality at all times.
- Work closely with community alcohol services, and other hospital and community teams to ensure an effective seamless transition between hospital and community services
- Demonstrate a proactive approach to patient safety, quality improvement and contribution to the maintenance of the high standards of care of the service. Develop leadership and management skills.

Person SpecificationEducation and qualificationsEssential- Registered Adult or Mental health nurse
Desirable- Mentoring qualification or equivalent
- Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD)
- Relevant post-registration education associated with AUD
Knowledge, skills and abilitiesEssential- A good awareness of mental and physical health complications of alcohol use and treatment
- Excellent communication and negotiating skills
Desirable- An understanding of local and national alcohol guidelines/policies
- Experience working autonomously and commitment to a learning team
ExperienceEssential- Experience as a band 5 nurse managing patients in acute withdrawals/AUD
- Relevant experience as a band 5 nurse in an acute hospital setting or a relevant speciality
Personal qualitiesEssential- Commitment to working as part of a team to improve patient outcomes
- Demonstrates self-motivation and self-awareness
- Adaptable and flexible to changing services
- Good organisation skills
