Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to join the Medical Research Unit.

We are looking for a highly motivated professional to fill the role of a Research Nurse or Clinical Research Practitioner.

We deliver a wide range of clinical trials within the division of Medicine, in specialities including Dermatology, Rheumatology, Gastroenterology, Stroke/Lipids, Respiratory/sleep, Microbiology and Hepatology.

If you would like to join a supportive team in a dynamic and exciting setting, where you can develop your skills and work with colleagues across the Trust then this role is for you.

The post holder will work as part of a growing, enthusiastic team of administrators, research nurses, and other research staff as part of the multi-disciplinary team supporting the delivery of clinical trials.

Anyone applying for the Research Nurse position needs to hold a NMC registration.

Main duties of the job
The research nurse is expected to support the safe conduct of research in accordance with the regulatory and legal frameworks related to the planning, recruiting and follow-up of clinical research studies.

Working as part of the research team the research nurse will be accountable for the assessment, planning, organisation and on-going care of research participants according to the study protocol.

Skills and Abilities
Essential
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team and use own initiative
  • Evidence of good management and organisational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage resources effectively
  • Good report writing, a focus on accuracy and meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to prioritise to ensure effective and efficient workload completion
  • Excellent IT and computer skills

Desirable
  • Experienced in venepuncture

Aptitudes
Essential
  • Personal insight and awareness with ability to recognise own limits
  • Ability to work flexibly according to role need
  • Enthusiasm for and desire to embed research within clinical practice
  • Personal focus on the 6 Cs: Care, Compassion, Courage, Commitment, Competence & Communication
  • 2 years NHS experience working in outpatients or on the wards

Qualifications and Training
Essential
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Registered General Nurse (RGN) (if applying for research nurse position)

Desirable
  • Undergraduate degree in Nursing, Science or Health related discipline
  • Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training

Knowledge and Experience
Essential
  • Broad knowledge and experience of clinical practice within an acute hospital environment
  • Interest in clinical research
  • Knowledge of Data Protection Act 1984 and Caldicott principles
  • Good understanding of the use of medical terminology

Desirable
  • Research/audit experience
