Job summary
The Trainee Emergency Practitioner will undertake a structured programme of academic and clinical development to achieve the knowledge, skills and competencies required for Emergency Practitioner practice.

Main duties of the job
To identify learning needs along with a mentor and develop and build upon clinical examination, management skills and diagnostic reasoning skills.

Practice in compliance with your code of professional conduct and within your agreed scope of practice, being responsible and accountable for your decisions, actions and omissions at this level of practice.

Practice with support at a high level of clinical expertise in assessing and diagnosing patients who present to the Adult Emergency Department

Demonstrates with support specialist skills, knowledge and expertise in clinical practice managing entire episodes of care for patients with previously undiagnosed and undifferentiated clinical conditions. This includes the appropriate requesting of investigations (x-ray, CT, ultrasound, blood tests) and the interpretation of x-rays and diagnostic tests.

Demonstrates with support safe clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills, as well as assessing and managing clinical risk.

Ensures with support that clinical practice is evidence based..

Is aware of professional limitations in clinical skills and knowledge, referring patients to specialities as clinically indicated and seeking advice where appropriate.

To identify and act upon situations which may be detrimental to health and well-being of patients for example identification and management of vulnerable adult, domestic violence and safeguarding children.

Job responsibilities
The Trainee Emergency Practitioner is a development role, supporting registered professionals to develop autonomous practice in assessment, diagnosis and management of minor injury and illness within the emergency department. The postholder undertakes supervised clinical practice and academic study while contributing to safe, evidence-based patient care.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Assess, examine and manage patients presenting with minor illness and injury, under appropriate clinical supervision.
  • Develop clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning, investigation and treatment skills within agreed competencies.
  • Recognise and escalate deteriorating or complex patients appropriately.
  • Contribute to safe and effective patient flow and delivery of high-quality, patient-centred care within the Emergency Department.
  • Maintain accurate clinical records and practise in accordance with Trust policies, professional standards, safeguarding and infection prevention requirements.
  • Complete the required academic programme, clinical competencies, portfolio and assessments within the agreed timeframe.
  • Participate in clinical supervision, reflective practice, audit, quality improvement and service development.
  • Work collaboratively within the multidisciplinary team and communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues.
  • Develop increasing autonomy and accountability as competence is demonstrated, while recognising professional limitations and seeking senior support when required.

Person Specification
Qualification and experience
Essential
  • NMC/HCPP Registration
  • Experience in working at a senior level in an emergency care setting
  • Competence in wound management and advance plastering skills
  • Evidence of formal ongoing professional development in specialist area
