We make health happen
As a Unit Manager, you will play a central role in ensuring our medical ward and Acute Admissions Unit deliver consistently safe, high‑quality, patient‑centred care. We make health happen by empowering our leaders to be visible, accountable, and responsive — supporting patients, families, and colleagues throughout the entire care journey. In this role, you will help uphold the highest professional standards, strengthen the nursing voice, and ensure our wards remain compliant, compassionate, and continuously improving. Through inclusive leadership, clinical excellence, and a commitment to learning, you will help shape an exceptional environment where both patients and staff thrive.

How you’ll help us make health happen
  • Provide strong, senior clinical leadership across the medical ward and AAU, ensuring safe staffing, professional standards, and visible management presence.
  • Support Team Leaders to deliver high‑quality, patient‑focused care, embedding an evidence‑based approach to clinical practice.
  • Lead and monitor quality improvement initiatives, ensuring audits, documentation standards, and regulatory compliance are consistently met.
  • Manage and investigate clinical incidents and complaints, embedding learning and driving service improvements across the unit.
  • Promote an inclusive and positive culture, acting as a role model and supporting staff through coaching, performance management, and development.
  • Work closely with the Modern Matron on workforce planning, safe staffing, resource management and financial oversight.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with Consultants, the MDT, and Clinical Education teams to enhance clinical effectiveness and skills development.
  • Ensure safeguarding, infection control, health & safety, and all governance processes are followed and upheld at all times.
  • Deputise for the Modern Matron where required, supporting operational delivery and strategic initiatives across the service.

Key Skills / Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered Nurse with valid NMC registration.
  • Teaching/assessing qualification.
  • Significant clinical and management experience within an acute hospital setting.
  • Experience leading change, embedding clinical improvements, and supporting service transformation.
  • Experience in clinical audits, complaints management, and developing best‑practice protocols.
  • Strong knowledge of NMC standards, CQC requirements, governance, safeguarding, and risk management.
  • Excellent communication, influencing, analytical and organisational skills; confident with Microsoft Office.

Desirable

  • Experience in research and development.
