Job summary
We are recruiting to a full-time Band 7 position within our Community Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) service in Wandsworth. We welcome applications from qualified Speech and Language Therapists who are committed to delivering high-quality care and are interested in working in a community setting.

Our dedicated and supportive team sits within the Community Adult Health Services provided by Wandsworth CLCH Trust. We are a community-based therapy team providing care to the residents of Wandsworth within their own homes, care homes or day centres.

In this role, you will work with a general adult caseload, carrying out assessment, treatment, and support to those experiencing swallowing difficulties and communication impairments. You will collaborate closely with our community colleagues across multidisciplinary teams, primary and secondary care services, voluntary and third sector organisations.

Main duties of the job
  • Take an active role within the clinical team, contributing to the delivery of a comprehensive, highly specialist Speech and Language Therapy service.
  • Provide skilled dysphagia and communication assessments and treatments to the general adult community population of Wandsworth.
  • To be proficient in managing a complex caseload of a variety of long-term conditions including dementia.
  • Work in line with professional standards and clinical guidelines, supporting best practice across the service.
  • Carry out all aspects of clinical care, including assessment, treatment planning, and maintaining accurate, timely clinical records. You will work independently with your caseload, with appropriate support from the wider team.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Registered with Health Professions Council
  • Evidence of postgraduate qualification in dysphagia and significant experience of working in this area

Desirable
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist
  • Counselling skills training
  • Membership of Clinical Excellence Networks

Skills
Essential
  • In depth knowledge of working with the elderly population including the impact of long-term conditions
  • To be competent in handling the mental, emotional and psycho-social aspects of working with the elderly population with complex health conditions
  • Ability to apply core Speech & Language therapy skills across a range of clinical conditions within a client centred, goal setting approach
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both verbal and written
  • IT skills - e.g. Microsoft Word, Power point, Excel, Outlook
  • To be familiar with relevant current legislation and clinical guidelines
  • To have knowledge of outcome measures and their use
  • Ability to problem solve, prioritise and demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning
  • Ability to work in less predictable environment and able to manage own time and prioritise workload
  • Demonstration of good analytical and reflection skills
  • Ability to facilitate learning in others including via training and presentations

Experience
Essential
  • Working independently as a speech & language therapist specialising in the adult population
  • Experience of working with a broad communication and dysphagia caseload
  • Referring for and attending instrumental assessments e.g. VFS, FEES
  • Experience of working in a community setting with clients, carers and families
  • Experience of working with palliative and end of life clients
  • Excellent report writing and case note writing skills
  • Effective management of own caseload and supporting to develop caseload management skills in less experienced staff
  • Evidence of reflective clinical practice and supporting this in others
  • Experience of supervising others and supporting their development
  • Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of service development

Desirable
  • Experience of working within care home settings
  • Experience of leading research and clinical audit
