Job summary
Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, innovative and forward-thinking Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist to join its established and supportive consultant team. Based primarily at West Middlesex University Hospital, with cross-site responsibilities, this post offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery and development of high-quality, patient-centred obstetrics and gynaecology services across both Trust sites.

The successful post holder will work closely with consultant colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide safe, effective and compassionate care. Core clinical responsibilities will include gynaecology one-stop clinics, colposcopy, gynaecological oncology and rapid access services, theatre activity, antenatal clinics and participation in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology on-call rota, in line with departmental service requirements.

The appointment is for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) and includes participation in the non-resident Obstetrics and Gynaecology on-call rota.

The Trust is committed to providing accessible six-day services. The successful post holder may therefore be required to undertake elective weekend clinics or theatre sessions, in addition to routine out-of-hours commitments.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will join an established consultant team delivering high-quality, patient-centred Obstetrics and Gynaecology services across Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Based primarily at West Middlesex University Hospital, with opportunities for cross-site working, the post holder will contribute to the development and delivery of specialist gynaecology services, including gynaecological oncology and 2WW pathways, colposcopy, one-stop gynaecology clinics, acute gynaecology, and general obstetrics and gynaecology care.

The successful candidate will hold continuous clinical responsibility for patients under their care and work closely with consultant colleagues and the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective and compassionate care.

In addition to clinical duties, the post holder will contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate education, trainee supervision, quality improvement projects, audit, governance, service development, and participation in departmental, directorate and Trust-wide committees.

Job responsibilities
The successful candidate will provide consultant-led care across Obstetrics and Gynaecology, with a particular focus on Gynaecological Oncology, Rapid Access (2WW), Colposcopy, One-Stop Gynaecology and Acute Gynaecology services. Working within a supportive multidisciplinary team, the post holder will contribute to the continued development of high-quality, patient-centred services across Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The post holder will:
Clinical Responsibilities
  • Lead and deliver specialist Gynaecology Oncology, Rapid Access (2WW), Colposcopy and One-Stop Gynaecology services.
  • Provide high-quality general obstetric and gynaecology care in outpatient, inpatient, theatre and emergency settings.
  • Participate fully in the consultant-led Obstetrics and Gynaecology non-resident on-call rota.
  • Support the management of complex obstetric and gynaecological patients, including emergency and high-risk cases.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure timely access to care and delivery of excellent clinical outcomes.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of clinical pathways, guidelines and service improvements.

Leadership, Governance and Service Development
  • Actively contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, including Gynaecological Oncology MDT and Perinatal MDT meetings.
  • Support service transformation, pathway redesign and operational performance objectives.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, innovation and learning within the department.

Teaching, Training and Research
  • Provide teaching and clinical supervision for undergraduate medical students and postgraduate trainees.
  • Act as Educational or Clinical Supervisor where appropriate.
  • Support trainee-led audits and Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs).
  • Participate in continuing professional development and appraisal in line with GMC and Trust requirements.
  • Contribute to research, service evaluation and innovation activities where appropriate.

Management and Professional Responsibilities
  • Participate in departmental, directorate and Trust meetings.
  • Support workforce planning, junior doctor supervision and recruitment activities as required.
  • Demonstrate leadership, professionalism and a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Maintain compliance with Trust policies, GMC Good Medical Practice and all mandatory training requirements.

On-Call Commitment
The post includes participation in the consultant non-resident Obstetrics and Gynaecology on-call rotas, currently:
  • Obstetrics: 1:24 rota, including a fixed weekly on-call day and weekend commitments.
  • Gynaecology: 1:17 rota, including a fixed weekly on-call day and weekend commitments.
  • The post holder must be able to attend the hospital within 30 minutes when on call, in accordance with Trust policy.

The exact job plan and on-call arrangements will be agreed with the successful candidate through the Trust's job planning process.

Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise and entry on the Specialist Register for Obstetrics and Gynaecology (or within 6 months of CCT/equivalent at AAC)
  • MRCOG or equivalent specialist qualification
  • Evidence of colposcopy accreditation, recognised competency or current substantial experience in diagnostic and therapeutic colposcopy appropriate to consultant practice or evidence of working towards the same.
  • Advanced training or equivalent experience relevant to labour ward practice, high-risk obstetrics, acute gynaecology and/or benign gynaecology.

Experience, Skills and Knowledge
Essential
  • Clinical training and experience in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology equivalent to that required for UK CCT
  • Experience in gynaecological oncology, rapid access / two-week-wait clinics, cancer pathway management and oncology MDT working.
  • Experience in acute gynaecology and one-stop gynaecology services, including senior clinical decision-making, triage and ambulatory pathways.
  • Competence in gynaecological ultrasound to support acute gynaecology, early pregnancy assessment and one-stop clinic decision-making.
  • Surgical experience in benign and emergency gynaecology, with ability to support elective and emergency theatre activity and supervise trainees appropriately.
  • Experience in general obstetrics, high-risk antenatal care and intrapartum / postpartum management appropriate to consultant on-call practice.
  • Ability to participate in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology non-resident on-call rota and to work flexibly across West Middlesex and Chelsea and Westminster sites as required.

Desirable
  • Experience in colposcopy clinics, including assessment, treatment, follow-up and contribution to colposcopy MDT / quality assurance processes.

Teaching, Research, Governance and Communication
Essential
  • Evidence of teaching, supervision and training of undergraduate students, postgraduate trainees and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Evidence of participation in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, incident reporting and implementation of learning from incidents.
  • Understanding of GMC Good Medical Practice, NICE guidance, NHS clinical governance requirements and relevant national standards for women's services.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to communicate effectively with patients, families and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Appropriate IT skills and ability to use clinical systems to support safe, effective and timely care.
  • Understanding of NHS organisation, access standards and cancer pathway requirements relevant to gynaecology services.

Desirable
  • Experience of developing pathways, guidelines or service improvements for acute gynaecology, one-stop services, colposcopy or gynaecological oncology.
  • Additional specialist training or demonstrable experience in outpatient hysteroscopy, early pregnancy care, benign gynaecology or minimally invasive surgery.
  • Evidence of research, publication, presentation or critical appraisal relevant to obstetrics, gynaecology or women's health.
  • Management course, leadership development or evidence of contribution to operational or service leadership.
