Job summaryWe wish to recruit an enthusiastic and creative Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to join the Older Adult Pathway in Northumberland. This post will largely be based at Ashmore House in Ashington, covering South Central Northumberland, but with flexibility to pick up cases as required across other Northumberland areas. The post is a 0.8wte 12-month fixed term Band 7. The person appointed will be working within the South Central Northumberland Community Treatment Team, alongside our Psychological Therapist.
Main duties of the jobAs part of the Community Treatment Team the person appointed will be providing psychological assessment, formulation and treatment for older adult clients and families experiencing a variety of complex mental health difficulties. In addition, there will be opportunities to support the provision of supervision and scaffolding to members of the Community Treatment Team.
Experience of working psychologically with older people with complexity and co-morbid difficulties would be an advantage. The post will provide opportunities for developing skills in teaching/training, clinical supervision, research, as well as involvement in service development.
The Psychology Network is friendly and supportive. The Psychology Team is embedded within a thriving network of clinicians providing services to Older Adults in Northumberland, and there is a very active local FPOP branch. Additionally, we have close links with the Newcastle and Teesside Doctorate training courses and regularly have Trainees on placement as well as contributing to the course teaching.

Person SpecificationEducation and QualificationEssential- Doctoral level training in clinical/counselling psychology including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and Neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the British Psychological Society and the HCPC.
- HCPC registration as practitioner psychologist
Desirable- Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology./Additional training in specific therapeutic approaches
Knowledge and ExperienceEssential- Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings including outpatient, community, primary care, and inpatient settings.
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course with presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity, including severe and enduring mental health problems, psychosis and personality disorder. This includes maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the possibility of physical abuse.
- Doctoral level knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex multivariable data analysis as practiced within the clinical fields of psychology.
Desirable- Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
- Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
- Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health.
Skills and CompetenciesEssential- Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management. Skills in evidence based psychological interventions.
- Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinical sensitive information to clients, their family, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
- Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.
