Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry to provide senior clinical leadership across the West Devon Core Mental Health team and Home Treatment Team. Based at the Quay in Tavistock, with Clinics across West Devon, you will support adults aged 18-65 across vibrant rural, market-towns and coastal communities.

Main duties of the job
Based in Tavistock, you will provide expert psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment for adults supported by the West Devon Core Mental Health Team and Home Treatment Team. As the senior medical clinician, you will offer advice on formulation, medication, risk assessment and care planning, helping multidisciplinary colleagues make timely, safe and person-centred decisions.

You will manage a varied caseload, contribute to multidisciplinary reviews and support people with complex mental health needs in both community and urgent care settings. Working closely with GPs, inpatient services, crisis teams, psychological therapies and partner agencies, you will help maintain coordinated care, effective communication and safe transitions between services.

The role also includes providing clinical leadership to both teams, supporting service development, quality improvement and clinical governance, and contributing to audit and learning from incidents. You will supervise and support medical colleagues, contribute to teaching and take part in the Section 12 and consultant on-call rotas. Dedicated SPA time is provided for continuing professional development, appraisal, management, leadership and other supporting professional activities.

Teaching and Supervision
Essential

• Experience of teaching undergraduates and postgraduates.

Desirable

• Evidence of additional teaching skills.
• Experience as a lecturer or supervisor.

Management
Essential

• Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and managers.
• Awareness of NHS management and funding arrangements.

Qualifications
Essential

• Full Registration with the General Medical Council.
• To hold Approved Clinician status at the point of taking up post.
• Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview
• Approved under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.

Desirable

• MRC Psych
• Other professional qualification
• (e.g. CBT, PSI, CAT ).

Experience

• Prior experience working in a Community Mental Health Team.
• Experience of psychiatric practice in a range of settings, especially the community.
