Job summary
This is a great opportunity for a newly qualified or suitably experienced Speech and Language Therapist to join our dedicated Stroke and Neurology Team at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (DBTH). The post holder will work within a high performing MDT across and be based at Doncaster Royal Infirmary providing assessment and therapy for existing stroke and neurological inpatients.

The Therapy team on the HASU/ASU has already been recognised for delivering high quality care to patients. The post holder will be crucial in providing timely assessment and intensive rehabilitation during the acute recovery from stroke.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be offered the chance to gain experience in:

• Acute Stroke Service at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
• There may be the opportunity to also gain experience working in the Inpatient Rehabilitation stroke unit at Mexborough Montagu.

The successful post holder will be part of a positive and proactive integrated therapy team providing specialist assessments and rehabilitation for patients with acquired communication impairments and dysphagia. They will be supported to develop competencies is dysphagia management as required.

Depending on the experience, skills and competencies the successful applicant may contribute to the delivery of 7 day services on HASU. There is full senior support and a structured supervision process. A flexible and pro-active approach is essential for this post, as are excellent communication and team working skills.

This post would ideally suit someone who would like the opportunity to:

• Gain experience in stroke and neurology
• Provide assessment and intensive therapy to stroke patients with complex communication difficulties.
• Work as a member of the multi-disciplinary teams, sharing and contributing to team meetings and updating others of own work
• Gain standardised competencies in dysphagia management and develop dysphagia skills in an acute and rehabilitation setting.

Essential

• Member of the Healthcare Professions Council
• Professional specific degree i.e. BSC speech sciences or Masters in medical sciences
• Certificate to practise

• Post basic Dysphagia Training
• Training in neurological Conditions

Knowledge & Experience
Essential

• Experience of working within adult Stroke and acquired neurological communication disorders as a student or qualified Speech and Language Therapist.
• Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team
• Knowledge of assessment tools relevant to the client group
• Knowledge of a range of appropriate therapeutic interventions relevant to the client group

Desirable

• Experience working with neurological dysphagia.
