Job summary
East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Consultant Neurophysiologist to join our expanding Neurosciences team. This is a substantive, full-time post based at Kent & Canterbury Hospital, with cross-site responsibilities as required. Salary: £113,565 - £150,569 per annum.

You will play a key role in delivering high-quality neurophysiology services, supporting diagnosis and management of neurological disorders across the Trust. This is an exciting opportunity to work in one of the largest Neuroscience centres outside London, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for EEG, EMG, nerve conduction studies, and video telemetry.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide specialist neurophysiology services including EEG, EMG, and nerve conduction studies for adult and paediatric patients.
  • Interpret and report neurophysiological investigations accurately and promptly.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Support teaching and training of medical students, trainees, and clinical scientists.
  • Engage in continuing professional development and maintain GMC revalidation requirements.

Job Plan:
  • 10 PAs per week (8 DCC, 1-2 SPA)
  • Outpatient neurophysiology clinics and diagnostic reporting sessions (approx. up to 6 per week)
  • No on-call commitment

Job responsibilities
The successful candidate will join a dynamic team comprising 11 Consultant Neurologists, 1 existing Consultant Neurophysiologist, specialist grade doctors, trainees, and clinical neurophysiology technicians. You will be responsible for delivering high-quality diagnostic services, including EEG (routine and prolonged), EMG, and nerve conduction studies, with annual volumes of approximately 1,2001,500 EEGs and 8001,000 EMG/NCS studies.

Essential Requirements:
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register in Clinical Neurophysiology (or within 6 months of CCT at interview)
  • Proven experience in EEG, EMG, and nerve conduction studies

Desirable:
  • Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)
  • Experience in paediatric neurophysiology
  • Evidence of research and publications

Qualifications & Training
Essential
  • Full GMC Registration with License to practice
  • Inclusion on Specialist Register in Clinical Neurophysiology (or within 6 months of CCT at interview)
  • MRCP or equivalent qualification
  • Minimum of English Level 2 ILETS, or graduate of a UK Medical SchoolMRCP(UK) or equivalent qualification

Desirable

Knowledge & Skills
Essential
  • Comprehensive knowledge of clinical neurophysiology
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Able to converse at ease with patients, provide advice in accurate spoken English

Desirable
  • Teaching experience for medical students and trainees

Clinical Governance
Essential
  • Participation in clinical audit, CPD, and revalidation
  • Engagement with Morbidity & Mortality reviews
  • Experience with Structured Judgement Reviews
  • Learning from incidents and complaints
  • Understanding of patient safety and quality improvement
  • Understanding of clinical governance principles

Desirable
  • Involvement in service development initiatives

Experience
Essential
  • Proven experience in EEG, EMG, and nerve conduction studies
  • Ability to interpret and report neurophysiological investigations accurately
  • Able to converse at ease with patients, provide advice in accurate spoken English
