Job summary
We are currently in an exciting period of expansion and development for Adult & Paediatric Ear, Nose & Throat services in East Kent Hospitals. The ENT Department forms part of Specialist Surgery (along with Ophthalmology and Maxillo Facial Services) within East Kent Hospitals. All 3 Departments share a subspecialist Head and Neck Ward at William Harvey Hospital. ENT currently has regular access to both Padua Ward at WHH & Dolphin Ward at K&C.

Attracting 10 PAs, applications are invited for a Paediatric ENT Consultant, with the skills and knowledge to also support General ENT. On call commitment required at William Harvey base site, working alongside 14 Consultants.

We aim for every consultant to excel in both clinical and non-clinical endeavors, including clinical leadership, research, teaching and other allied areas, supported by innovative development programs provided within the trust.

Main duties of the job
This is a 10PA role with additional on-call requirements. The appointee will primarily be based at William Harvey Hospital, Ashford and will deliver general paediatric surgery & clinics, associated admin work, and have proportionate SPA time - there will also be an element of General adult ENT activity. An important purpose of this role is to improve the medical pathway of paediatric patients and the surgical pathway of those attending Padua & Dolphin Ward, ensuring the delivery of activity against plan and managing the demand against the Referral & Treatment Criteria.

Qualifications and Training
Essential

• Full GMC registration with license to practice
• Specialist Register or within six months of CCT at time of scheduled interview
• Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), ILETS, or graduate of a UK Medical School
• Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
• Valid BLS Training
• Paediatric ENT fellowship
• Evidence of leadership attributes / experience
• Evidence of delivery for strategic transformational pathways

Desirable

• Higher degree, eg. MSc, MD, PhD
• Other awards / titles e.g., Honorary lecturer
• Other post graduate qualification or clear potential to achieve e.g., MD/PhD
• APLS, EPALS or NLS Instructor

Skills & Experience
Essential

• Is able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Training in ENT
• Commitment to maintaining & developing knowledge
• Displays sound professional judgement
• Good communication skills
• Evidence of participation in clinical audit/QI project
• Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels
• Broad experience in the management of ENT elective surgery and emergency care
• Experience of working in a multidisciplinary environment

Desirable

• Working in the NHS
• Delivering and leading clinical research including publication and training in a desirable sub-specialty
• Experience and formal appointment in teaching undergraduates
• Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels
• Willingness to build a business case and set up new services

Clinical Governance
Essential

• Understanding of processes by which children and young people are kept safe
• Demonstrated commitment and enthusiasm for quality improvement
• Evidence of involvement in Audit/QI/Governance processes
• Ability to identify, assess, and manage clinical risk across outpatient, inpatient, theatre, and emergency settings
• Self-audit of outcomes
• Experience of incident reporting, investigation, and reflective practice in line with Trust and national patient safety processes

Desirable

• Training / experience in methodology for investigation of serious incidents
• Experience in governance or leadership roles
• Nationally or internationally recognised quality improvement/ service development
• Research qualification
• Involvement in research
