Job Summary
To provide a specialist forensic child and adolescent mental health service to young people and their families who have become involved in the Criminal Justice System and are on a Court Order..

Main Duties of the Job
To provide an effective interface between Health and the Criminal Justice System as the post sits directly at the interface of these two systems. The post holder has to be aware of, adhere to and be accountable to the relevant practices and management structure in both systems.

To contribute directly to the positive working environment within the multi-agency team. This will require a high degree of professional autonomy and self-management. Professional practice will be accounted for through appraisal and audit

To provide specialist advice and consultation regarding diagnoses and treatment to CAMHS colleagues, external agencies, working autonomously within professional guidelines.

To manage, plan and prioritise own clinical caseload and to exercise autonomous professional responsibility for the assessment and treatment, including management of risks. This is done independently within appropriate clinical/professional guidelines.

To work collaboratively with CAMHS colleagues to develop and improve the work of the service.

Person Specification
Education/Qualification/Training
Essential
  • A qualification in Clinical Psychology, Family Therapy, Registered Mental Health Nursing or Child Psychotherapy. Counselling Psychology may be considered if the applicant has relevant CAMHS experience.

Experience
Essential
  • Previous experience of working in CAMHS
  • Experience of working with a wide range of CAMHS problems including ASD
  • Experience of working with young people and families who are involved in the youth Justice System
  • Experience of care planning
  • Experience of working in a culturally diverse Inner city area
  • Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary way
  • Experience in crisis work

Desirable
  • Work in a multi-cultural setting, including working with interpreters.
  • Experience of multiagency working

Skills and Abilities
Essential
  • Evidence of well-developed clinical skills and knowledge in CAMHS
  • Well-developed clinical skills working with vulnerable young people who may have had aversive experiences receiving help from statutory services
  • Well-developed clinical skills working with young people involved in the youth justice system
  • Skilled in emergency and crisis assessments
  • Specialist clinical skills within specific therapeutic modalities
  • Able to manage own time and caseload
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Evidence of ability to lead, support and influence others
  • Able to work effectively across organisational boundaries
  • Teaching skills, both in clinical setting and education centres
  • Basic computer skills

Knowledge
Essential
  • A high degree of self-awareness and an ability to reflect on personal and professional attitudes and accept feedback
  • Knowledge and interest in the youth Justice System and the impact that this might have on young people
  • Awareness of current national guidelines and policies in the field of CAMHS
  • Specific knowledge of pertinent issues for CAMHS
  • In depth knowledge of CAMHS issues including assessment and interventions
  • Knowledge of The Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007) and associated legislation
  • Knowledge of specific inner city issues which impact of care delivery
  • Knowledge of the Children's Act and other appropriate legislation
  • Knowledge of standard setting and audit implementation
  • An awareness of different research methods
  • A working knowledge of Child Protection Guidelines

  • Knowledge of development in inter agency partnership

  • Proven qualities in sustaining the mental, emotional and physical demands of specialized therapeutic work with disturbed and distressed children, adolescents and their families/carer networks.

  • Freedom to act: Physical effort: Confined sitting position(therapy);travelling within community; fine motor skills re injections Mental effort: writing reports; planning teaching; concentrating for therapy sessions /clinical supervision; managing psychiatric emergencies; precise accuracy when administering medication (for nurses). Emotional effort: Dealing with families in breakdown; experiencing trauma and abuse; occasional patient complaints; conveying of unwelcome news Working conditions: Occasional verbal and physical abuse; unpredictable clinical scenarios e.g. emergency home visits; travel in community all weathers.
