Job summary
The post holder will be a Ward Manager based within the Linden Centre on Finchingfield Ward.

Finchingfield Ward is an 18-bed male acute mental health treatment ward which provides psychiatric assessment, inpatient care, and treatment for men experiencing acute mental health difficulties

Main duties of the job
The post holder is responsible for overseeing the assessments of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for service users with mental health needs. The post holder works under the overall management supervision of the Clinical Manager/Matron and is required to undertake the duties of the post autonomously, but with support. Active participation will be required in the training and education of learners allocated to the ward, and will also encourage integration between the ward teams and the community services.

To carry out any other duties commensurate with the duties of this post. This is an outline job description and may be subject to change according to the needs of the service, in consultation with the post holder.

Job description
Job responsibilities
  • 01. In liaison with the Clinical Manager/Matron, Service Manager, Associate Director and Director to set objectives for the delivery of care within the area and to devise ways of implementing and monitoring these.
  • 02. To work closely with the Executive Nurse in developing nursing practice across inpatient wards.
  • 03. To have knowledge/understanding of the legislation likely to be encountered as part of the role e.g. Mental Health Act 1983, as amended in 2007, Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, Access to Information Act 1986, Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
  • 04. To ensure full compliance with standards laid out in the Trusts CPA Policy & Procedure.
  • 05. In coordination with the Clinical Manager/Matron, Service Manager and Director, report and investigate incidents, complaints, accidents and ensure all appropriate documentation is completed and submitted as soon as possible after the incident.
  • 06. Participate in and evaluate audit and research within the unit.
  • 07. To lead on infection control within the ward and ensure all Trust policies are adhered to.
  • 08. Inform the Clinical Manager/Matron, Service Manager and Director on all breaches of nursing professional conduct as required by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct.
  • 09. To liaise with Human Resources and follow the appropriate Policies and Procedures to manage staff concerns.
  • 10. Joint oversight and management with the neighbouring Ward Manager of the Health Based Place of Safety with Clinical Manager/Matrons support.
  • 11. To be responsible for updating own knowledge of contemporary mental health services and a commitment to continuing ones own personal career development in line with Trusts Appraisal and Development Policy.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered RMN
  • Experience as deputy Ward Manager or equivalent
  • Evidence of personal and professional development

Desirable
  • Educated to Degree level in health
  • Additional Professional Qualification

Leading and Managing
Essential
  • Ability to set clear objectives and targets and motivate staff to achieve them
  • Ability to seek ways of improving individuals performance but training, coaching and development
  • Develop team spirit and inclusivity

Desirable
  • Evidence of personal leadership development
