Frimley Health NHS Foundation TrustAdvanced Specialist Orthoptist – Lead Clinical TutorThe closing date is 22 July 2026Job summaryAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 7 Specialist Orthoptist - Clinical Tutor to join the Orthoptic team at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust. The post is primarily based at Frimley Park Hospital, with cross-site working required across all Trust locations.
The successful candidate will work as an autonomous practitioner, providing a high-quality Orthoptic service, including the assessment, diagnosis and management of a wide range of orthoptic conditions across inpatient and outpatient settings. You will contribute to a comprehensive, patient-centred service and work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
A key element of this role is leading the clinical education provision for the department. As Lead Orthoptic Clinical Tutor, you will coordinate and support the training of orthoptic undergraduate students, apprentices and pre-registration optometrists, ensuring a high standard of clinical supervision and learning experience.
This role is ideal for an experienced orthoptist with a passion for both clinical excellence and education, looking to play a pivotal role in service delivery and workforce development within a supportive and innovative Trust.
Main duties of the job- Provide specialist Orthoptic assessment, diagnosis and management for patients referred from a range of services including paediatrics, A&E, maxillofacial, endocrinology and neurology.
- Manage a diverse caseload including ocular motility defects, amblyopia, and complex congenital and acquired conditions, including neurological and genetic disorders.
- Undertake and interpret visual acuity assessments across all patient groups, including infants, adults with learning difficulties, and patients with complex needs.
- Plan, implement and review individualised treatment programmes using advanced clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice, working as an autonomous practitioner.
- Develop appropriate discharge plans and facilitate onward referrals where required.
- Undertake Orthoptic clinics across community and off-site settings and contribute to service delivery across the Trust.
- Participate in extended roles to support service development and patient care pathways.
- Act as Lead Orthoptic Clinical Tutor, coordinating and supporting the training of undergraduate students, apprentices and pre-registration optometrists.
