Main duties of the job
  • This is a full-time Consultant Rheumatologist post (10.0 Programmed Activities).
  • The successful candidate will join a supportive and multidisciplinary Rheumatology team comprising two full-time consultants, one SAS doctor, four Clinical Nurse Specialists, and dedicated administrative support.
  • This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development and expansion of Rheumatology services at George Eliot Hospital.
  • The successful applicant will be encouraged and supported to develop a specialist interest and, where desired, contribute to the general medical on-call rota.
  • The post holder will have the opportunity to participate in and further develop our Early Arthritis Service, including dedicated early arthritis clinics. Musculoskeletal ultrasound is an established component of the service, supporting the timely assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with inflammatory arthritis.
  • Candidates with an interest or expertise in rheumatology ultrasound will be particularly welcomed and supported in developing this aspect of the service.

The post also provides opportunities for close collaborative working with colleagues at South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust, including participation in joint multidisciplinary team meetings, governance activities, and service development initiatives.

Job responsibilities
  • The job plan below is an indicative example of a job plan. A formal job plan will be agreed between the post holder, colleagues and the Directorate Clinical Director soon after the commencement date and will be effective from that date.
  • The Job Plan, a prospective agreement that sets out a consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives, will be reviewed periodically. Annual consultant appraisals will be carried out as part of the National Revalidation process.
  • The post holder will have access to secretarial support from two band four secretaries and a band three team secretary.
  • Along with radiology including MRI, CT and Ultrasound service. The service also has access to pathology services and full operational support from General and Operational Managers.
  • The balance between Direct Clinical Care (DCC) activities and Supporting programmed Activities (SPA) will be agreed with the candidate as part of the initial job planning process.
  • For a full time post it is anticipated that 7.5-8.5 programmed activities (PA) will be for DCC, 1.5-2.5 PAs for SPA.

Qualification(s) and Professional Training
Essential
  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • MRCP Intercollegiate or equivalent
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) - CESR or European Community Rights.

Desirable
  • An appropriate higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)

Experience and Knowledge
Essential
  • Thorough & broad training in adult rheumatology
  • Teaching and commitment to education post- and under- graduate levels

Desirable
  • Higher qualification in education

Academic Achievements
Essential
  • Able to demonstrate successful participation in audit

Desirable
  • Evidence of completed and published research
  • Instigated, designed and completed audit projects and protocols
  • Experience of having supervised and supported research students
