Job summaryWoodpecker Ward is our pre-operative admissions ward where patients are admitted and prepared for Theatre. Once the patient goes to Theatre they are returned, post-op, to the Inpatient Wards throughout the hospital for overnight stays.
Nightingale Ward is our Day Case Ward where patients will be admitted, prepared for Theatre and then returned to the ward to complete their post-op recovery before being discharged later the same day.
Previous day care experience is not essential but desired. This is a nurse-led unit where we care for the patient from admission through to discharge, developing advanced nursing skills that can be easily transferrable. The unit is committed to the training and development of staff and each individual is supported by the Senior Nursing Team. This service is constantly expanding, caring for children and young people from birth to 18 years of age from all specialities throughout the hospital.
Woodpecker and Nightingale Wards are a place to develop or consolidate a variety of nursing skills including: time management on a fast paced, high turnover clinical environment; engagement with a wide range of clinical specialities; working in a clinical environment containing a broad range of ward-based healthcare professionals, including Healthcare Support Workers, Healthcare Assistants, Assistant Theatre Practitioners, Nursing Associates and Registered Nurses.
Main duties of the job- We have a growing educational programme which will help assist you contribute towards the high standards of nursing care we set across both wards by assisting in their own professional development. This development will be integral to maintaining such standards and by gaining experience within your role you will also be provided with in-depth training to give you the tools and confidence to develop within the role.
- To provide the highest standard of nursing care for the children, young people and their families at all times
- To plan, assess, implement and evaluate programmes of care for individual children and to supervise other staff in this activity
- To supervise and support members of the ward team as required, ensuring that all patients receive appropriate care
- To ensure that treatments prescribed by the medical staff are carried out, and that multidisciplinary team members are informed of changes in the patient's condition
Our unit is open Monday to Friday 07.00-20.00. This a full-time post, working 11.5 hour shifts 3-4 days per week.

Person SpecificationGOSH Culture and ValuesEssentialAcademic/Professional qualification/TrainingEssential- NMC Registered Nurse (Child) or NMC Registered Nurse / HCPC registered ODP with extensive paediatric experience
- Evidence of ongoing professional development relating to clinical speciality
- Basic life support
