Job summary
The Department of Dermatology is seeking a part-time (6.5 PA) Locum consultant for up to 12 months. It includes tertiary paediatric services in severe eczema as well as general paediatric dermatology clinics at St Thomas'. The post also includes general adult dermatology clinics at the St. Thomas' Hospital site. The post may have a requirement for flexible working across other South East London dermatology sites depending on service demand. We are looking for a dynamic applicant who is committed to excellence in patient care and who is forward-looking as we explore innovative ways of delivering our services.

As an organisation, we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients. This includes asking certain groups of staff to work more flexibly so that we can offer services to patients in the evenings and at weekends. We regard this flexibility as essential if we are to continue to provide first class patient care in the future. As a result, any offer of employment to a consultant post will be subject to you agreeing to work a new more flexible pattern of working in the future if required and in accordance with the provisions of the new Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust consultant contract.

Main duties of the job
St. John's Institute of Dermatology with Clinical Genetics, Rheumatology (including Lupus), Infection (including HIV and Sexual Health) and Allergy (Specialist Ambulatory Services) is one of the largest clinical directorates at GSTT. The clinical directorates are clinically led with separate budget and performance targets. The SAS Clinical Director is Dr Toby Garrood, the General Manager is Michaela Cashman and Head of Nursing is Louise Farrow.

The Dermatology Department provides a wide range of multidisciplinary specialist clinics as well as general dermatology services. Formerly a post graduate teaching hospital, it is now fully integrated into the Guys and St Thomas' Hospitals Trust and the Guy's and St Thomas' School of Medicine (GKT) of Kings College London. St. John's Institute of Dermatology contributes to GKT research activities as part of the Division of Genetics and Molecular Medicine, GKT Medical School, Kings College London and provides an annual MSc postgraduate course. Cutaneous medicine is also one of seven designated BRC themes which form a core component of the Biomed Research Centre at GSTT and KCL.

Provide High Quality Care to Patients
The post holder must be medically qualified and maintain GMC specialist registration and hold a licence to practice
To develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.
To ensure prompt attendance at agreed direct clinical care Programmed Activities.
To ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.

Research, Teaching and Training
To collaborate with academic and clinical colleagues to enhance the Trusts translational research portfolio, at all times meeting the full requirements of Good Clinical Practice and Research Governance.
To provide high quality teaching to medical undergraduates and members of other health care professions as required by the Clinical Director.
To act as educational supervisor and appraiser as delegated by the Clinical Director to ensure external accreditation of training post.

Performance Management
To work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas:
  • Clinical efficiency e.g. length of stay (LOS) reductions, reducing cancelled operations and Did Not Attend (DNA) rates.
  • Quality of outcomes e.g. infection control targets, reducing re-admission rates.
  • Financial management e.g. identification, implementation and achievement of cost improvement programmes and participating in efforts to ensure services are provided cost effectively e.g. managing locum agency spend, monitoring and managing the drug budget to target, ensuring accuracy of clinical data for the team.
  • Operational efficiency e.g. day-case rates, waiting list activity and demand management.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Eligible for full UK GMC registration and a Licence to Practise.
  • On GMC Specialist Register or within six months of attaining CCT

Clinical Experience
Essential
  • Comprehensive clinical experience in Dermatology

Clinical skills
Essential
  • Significant expertise in the management of secondary and tertiary services in Paediatric dermatology and genetics, Hidradenitis suppurativa, and general adult and paediatric dermatology

Audit management & IT
Essential
  • Track record of clinical governance, audit, management and IT skills required.
  • Understanding of principles of audit.

Desirable
  • Track record of service development.

Research, Teaching skill & experience
Essential
  • Track record of research, publications/ understanding / knowledge of research ethics.
  • Experience of involvement in or running of clinical trials
  • Experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates and junior medical staff.
  • Higher degree e.g. MSc.

Desirable
  • Evidence of original research.
  • Possession of PhD or MD.
  • Teaching qualification.
  • Ability to lead and develop a teaching programme.

Leadership/management skills
Essential
  • Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, persuade/ negotiate.
  • Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and exert appropriate authority.
  • Empathy, understanding, listening skills, patience and ability to work co-operatively with others.
  • Able to change and adapt, respond to changing circumstances and to cope with setbacks or pressure.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Staff Management; Experience of performance management, developing and motivating staff.
  • Knowledge of finance and budgets.

Desirable
  • Leadership in the development of clinical services.
