Job summaryApplications are invited for a Consultant in Congenital Cardiothoracic Surgery to join the surgical team in the Department of Congenital Heart Disease at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust (GSTT). Our directorates care for patients across our trust sites (Evelina London & St Thomas', Royal Brompton, and Harefield Hospital).
Main duties of the jobThis is a full-time post (10 programmed activities) with the option for additional programmed activities available according to the job plan.
The post will be based at Evelina Children's Hospital but will also have sessions at the Royal Brompton Hospital to support the Adult Congenital Programme. The successful applicant will be expected to have expertise in the full range of congenital cardiac surgery, with significant experience at consultant level and experience of a senior leadership role. The successful candidate will join the team of five congenital cardiac surgeons working with a large team of paediatric and adult congenital cardiologists and intensivists. The successful candidate will be on call for paediatric and adult congenital surgery.

The post-holder will have regular contact with vulnerable adults and/or children (0-18 years) and therefore this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such, it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Criminal Records Bureau to check for any previous criminal convictions.

As such, it is a requirement of your employment that the post-holder is prepared to work at any additional or different location owned or served by the Trust, either on an on-going or temporary basis, according to the demands of the service.
The Paediatric Cardiac Surgical Services are committed to meeting the standards set out by NHS England for the provision of congenital cardiac care for all age groups. There are 5 substantive consultant cardiac surgeons within the service supported by 32 paediatric cardiologists covering a range of sub-specialist areas including fetal cardiology, cardiac imaging, electrophysiology and interventional cardiology.
This is the largest congenital heart surgery programme in the UK (NICOR report 2025) , providing a comprehensive service from neonates to ACHD across the full range of conditions, except for implantable mechanical support and transplantation. The programme performs 700-750 open heart procedures per year in children and adults. The programme also delivers a large ECMO programme for both respiratory and cardiac life support.

Job responsibilitiesIt is a requirement of your employment that you be prepared to work at both sites and in any, either on an on-going or temporary basis according to the demands of the service.
The post-holder will be accountable to the Chief of Congenital Care surgery ; to the Clinical Director of the Childrens Cardio-Respiratory and Intensive Care Directorate and ultimately to the Medical Director of the Evelina London Women & Childrens Clinical Group. As well as the Medical Director of HLCC. The postholder will work closely with Clinical Leads for CHD and ACHD, Cardiac Anaesthesia and PICU across all Trust sites and with non-congenital cardiac surgeons and cardiologists in adult clinical groups.

Person SpecificationProfessional QualificationsEssential- GMC Registration and a Licence to Practise
- FRCS (CT) or equivalent
- Has, or is eligible for GMC Specialist Registration in Cardiothoracic Surgery
Desirable- Higher Degree - either completed or currently enrolled in a higher degree program
- Sub-speciality recognition in congenital cardiac surgery
Clinical ExperienceEssential- At least 4 years' experience working in a paediatric cardiac surgical centre at consultant level including mentoring junior surgeons
- Evidence of outcomes and full range of case complexity
Desirable- Departmental Leadership
- Additional training in another international program
- 10 years of experience at a paediatric cardiac centre
Audit Management & ITEssential- Ability to demonstrate a track record of clinical governance, audit and service improvement.
