Job summary
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Perinatal Consultant to provide clinical leadership and operational support within our Perinatal Services. Working closely with the Divisional Medical Director, Head of Nursing, and multidisciplinary teams, the post holder will play a key role in the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality care while supporting the strategic development of the service.

The Perinatal Clinical Lead will provide professional leadership to consultant colleagues, undertaking line management responsibilities and leading on annual job planning to ensure service needs are aligned with individual scope of practice.

The role will involve working collaboratively with senior clinical and operational leaders to address complaints, facilitate conflict resolution, support workforce recruitment and retention initiatives, and oversee medical staffing matters including annual and study leave approvals. With dedicated administrative support, the post holder will ensure effective medical leadership across the service and contribute to continuous quality improvement and service development.

Main duties of the job
The Perinatal Clinical Lead will provide clinical leadership and support the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality perinatal services across the Trust.

Key responsibilities include:

• Act as a member of the Trust-wide Perinatal Senior Leadership Team.
• Support the implementation of service developments, quality improvement initiatives, provider collaborative working, and accreditation/peer review processes.
• Ensure appropriate consultant representation at governance, commissioning, and service development meetings.
• Attend senior leadership meetings and deputise for the Divisional Medical Director when required.
• Work closely with Heads of Service and Heads of Nursing to provide clinical leadership and support the management of incidents, complaints, and service issues.
• Provide strategic clinical advice to support service planning, development, and commissioning.
• Line manage the consultant workforce through regular one-to-one meetings, consultant meetings, and annual job planning.
• Ensure all consultants have up-to-date job plans that meet service and organisational needs.
• Work with Medical HR and Medical Staffing teams to recruit and retain substantive and temporary medical staff.
• Oversee and approve annual leave and study leave requests, ensuring adequate clinical cover is maintained.
• Contribute to clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement, and service performance activities

Qualifications
Essential

• Full Registration with the General Medical Council
• MRCPsych or recognised equivalent
• Approved under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
• At least 3 years' experience as a Consultant Psychiatrist or Associate Specialist or Specialist

Desirable

• Relevant Higher Degree e.g., MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
• Liaison accreditation.
• To hold Approved Clinician status at the point of taking up post
• Medical leadership role

Experience
Essential

• Clinical leads must have respected clinical experience and be able to engage authentically. They must be resilient and have emotional intelligence (social awareness, self-regulation, self-awareness, motivation, empathy), be self-directed, and work effectively in collaboration with a team.
