Job DescriptionWe are seeking an experienced Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) to provide high-quality, patient-centred care throughout the perioperative pathway, delivering safe and effective practice within the anaesthetic, scrub and recovery areas.
This person will work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the highest standards of clinical care, patient safety, and service delivery.
The ODP will provide skilled support during the anaesthetic, surgical (scrub) and post-anaesthetic recovery phases, ensuring the highest standards of patient safety, clinical effectiveness and compassionate care. This person is accountable for maintaining professional standards in accordance with the requirements of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), contributing to service improvement and promoting a safe and efficient operating theatre environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Responsibilities- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients undergoing surgical procedures.
- Deliver safe and effective care during the anaesthetic, intraoperative, and post-anaesthetic recovery phases.
- Assist anaesthetists during induction, maintenance, and emergence from anaesthesia, ensuring appropriate monitoring and patient support.
- Function effectively within the scrub role, maintaining aseptic technique and ensuring the availability and integrity of surgical instruments and equipment.
- Monitor and care for patients in the recovery area, recognising and responding promptly to changes in physiological condition.
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records in accordance with professional and organisational standards.
- Ensure patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality are maintained at all times.
- Demonstrate sound clinical judgement and escalate concerns appropriately to maintain patient safety.
Patient Care- Provide compassionate, person-centred care to patients and their families throughout the perioperative journey.
- Support and reassure patients before and after surgery, promoting comfort and wellbeing.
- Advocate for patients and ensure informed consent and safeguarding principles are upheld.
Theatre and Equipment Management- Prepare and maintain operating theatres, ensuring specialist equipment, instruments, and consumables are available and functioning correctly.
- Adhere to infection prevention and control policies and maintain a safe, clean clinical environment.
- Participate in stock control and the safe handling, storage and disposal of clinical materials and waste.
Communication and Teamwork- Work effectively as part of the multidisciplinary team, including surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and support staff.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with patients, relatives and colleagues.
- Participate in handovers and contribute to effective care planning and service delivery.
Professional Responsibilities- Maintain current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and practise in accordance with HCPC standards of conduct, performance and ethics.
- Maintain competence across anaesthetic, scrub, and recovery practice.
- Participate in continuing professional development and mandatory training.
- Support quality improvement initiatives, clinical governance, and audit activities.
- Comply with organisational policies relating to safeguarding, health and safety, equality and diversity, and risk management.
Essential CriteriaQualifications- BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice or Diploma in Operating Department Practice.
- Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as an Operating Department Practitioner.
- Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to lifelong learning.
- Immediate Life Support (ILS) Certification
Experience- Experience working within the day case perioperative environment.
- Knowledge and practical experience of anaesthetic, scrub, and/or recovery practice.
- Experience of working effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Understanding of clinical governance, patient safety and risk management.
- Experience of maintaining accurate clinical records.
- Experience in a range of surgical specialities.
Knowledge- Knowledge of perioperative care and current evidence-based practice.
- Understanding of infection prevention and control principles.
- Knowledge of safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Understanding of health and safety legislation and risk assessment.
- Awareness of equality, diversity and inclusion principles.

Experience- Experience across all three perioperative disciplines (Anaesthetics, Scrub, and Recovery).
- Previous day case / acute surgical experience.
- Participation in audit, research, or quality improvement projects.
- Experience supervising students, newly qualified staff or support workers.
Knowledge- Knowledge of national standards and guidelines relevant to perioperative practice.
- Understanding of quality improvement methodologies and clinical audit processes.
- Awareness of digital healthcare systems and electronic patient records.
