Job summary
Do you have a real passion for working with children and young people with learning disabilities? We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated clinician to join Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) Learning Disability service to help deliver responsive and effective support for children, young people and their families.

This post is full time (37.5 hours/ week). The service covers Herefordshire and Worcestershire. We are looking for a clinician who will be primarily working in Herefordshire, and for any service-wide meetings you will be expected to travel to the service's main base in Malvern.

No two days will be the same, so flexibility, problem solving skills and a desire to make a difference are all vital for this role.

Main duties of the job
You will care co-ordinate a number of young people on your caseload, taking responsibility for assessments and therapeutic interventions.

You will carry out risk assessments appropriate for children and young people with mental health needs and learning disabilities and monitor and evaluate interventions using outcome measures.

You will have a proven ability to liaise with and work in collaboration with relevant agencies according to the needs of the young person. You will promote and maintain good working relationships and effective communication through liaison with service users, colleagues and other professionals.

You will operate in any appropriate settings including CAMHS bases, schools, families' homes, residential homes, CDC's etc. Occasional working within highly emotional environments with families and staff groups will require a high degree of self-awareness and effective communication skills.

You will work flexible hours to ensure the service can operate effectively to meet individual needs.

This post requires completion of all mandatory training including 'Safety Intervention' (subject to Occupational Health Clearance).

Job responsibilities
The post holder will:

• Use their initiative and take responsibility for themselves and the quality of their work and the service they provide to patients.
• Hold responsibility and effectively manage their caseload, ensuring specialist health interventions are delivered to children and young people in accordance with clinical decision making via a multi-disciplinary team.
• Assist in monitoring the appropriateness of referrals in relation to service access criteria, and monitor/develop the child service offered.
• Asses the mental health/behavioural needs and deliver therapeutic interventions with young people and their families, using approaches such as functional and developmental assessment, Positive Behaviour Support and family/parenting work.
• Act as a key worker for an individual caseload.
• Within their sphere of competence, be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of the children, young people and/or vulnerable adults for whom they are responsible or may come into contact with in.
• Facilitate/teach effective systems to carers/parents to enable the transfer of skills required to maintain positive management of behaviours.
• Deliver consultation to other professionals and agencies.
• Work with individuals and groups to prevent relapse of mental health and behaviours that challenge.
• Support generic CAMHS staff in learning disability related issues.
• Promote knowledge of mental health and the prevention of mental health illness with children and young people, members of the public and families.
• Review and reflect on own practice and performance through effective use of professional and operational supervision and the staff appraisal system.
• Promote and maintain good working relationships and effective communication through liaison with patients, their families, colleagues and other professionals.
• Carry out risk assessments appropriate for children and young people with a learning disability.
• Monitor and evaluate interventions using outcome measures.
• Develop, monitor and audit standards of practice to ensure compliance with best practice.
• Contribute towards preparation and delivery of training for carers and education staff, team members, colleagues in the trust and a variety of other agencies.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

• Professional Qualification: RNLD,RN (Child)/RMN, SW or OT

Desirable

• Relevant Post graduate study or be able to demonstrate further skills based training

Experience
Essential

• Experienced gained during pre- registration training either in a mental health or child placement setting
• Experience of working directly to support children, families and/or wider network of professionals
• Providing consultation to internal and external colleagues
• Experience in undertaking assessments

Desirable

• Working in inpatient settings
• Providing care in community settings
• Working in a multi-disciplinary Team

Knowledge
Essential

• Working knowledge of Health Service
• Good knowledge of mental health presentation in children with learning disabilities
• Understand a range of communication styles when working with children and families in distress
• Knowledge of Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Working Together to Safeguard Children and safeguarding procedures

Skills & Abilities
