Job SummaryA fantastic opportunity has arisen to build your clinical skills in paediatric dentistry as a Band A Paediatric Dental Officer within the Worcestershire Community Dental Service on a 9month fixed term basis. This is a part time post working 22.5 hours per week. This is a fixed term post to provide cover for absence for specific purpose that we anticipate will be required for 9 months. We reserve the right to end this contract sooner with appropriate notice. We are looking for an enthusiastic and caring clinician to work within our Paediatric Team. This role will be based over three days (Wednesday to Friday), with the base location to be agreed and discussed at interview. We are a consultant-led Community Dental Service, supporting children and young people with complex needs, behavioural challenges and medical conditions. Several of our clinics are equipped to provide dental treatment with inhalation and/or intravenous sedation; the service also provides dental treatment under General Anaesthesia at Kidderminster Hospital. Main duties of the jobYou will be managing a wide range of patients who meet the service acceptance criteria for Paediatric Dentistry - including children with learning difficulties, mental health problems, complex medical conditions, families experiencing complex social problems, severe anxiety and phobia. This list is not exhaustive, and the post-holder will be required to provide treatment to these patients with consultant support available as required. Supporting these patients requires a high level of sensitivity, compassion and excellent communication skills. To liaise with colleagues in General Dental Services, Hospital Dental Services and colleagues in Community Dental Services, to ensure that patients needs are met, and referrals are appropriately undertaken. You may be required to support Dental Core Trainees, you will be supported if this is required. To take responsibility for completing an appropriate level of clinical activity on patients, sufficient to ensure that the service can meet contractual targets for commissioners. To provide urgent dental care to patients across Worcestershire. Take responsibility for completing paperwork on time, including completion and transmission of FP17s to the Business Services Authority and completion of all service paperwork. Contribute to the services Clinical Governance programme in ways relevant to their role and as defined by the Clinical Director/Clinical Governance lead.

Job responsibilitiesIn addition to providing care in our clinical settings, including urgent dental care we work with a wide range of organisations and specialist services as well as providing oral health promotion, support, and advice across Worcestershire.
You will provide specialist care and support to our families. This will include:
- Assessment and treatment planning of paediatric patients
- Providing a range of preventive and restorative dental treatments
- Use of inhalation sedation where required, with in-house training available
- Providing comprehensive care and exodontia under general anaesthetic

Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- BDS/LDS degree
- Current registration on the UK General Dental Council
- Current membership of recognised protection society
- Completed VT training or equivalent or completed IQE/ORE
- On Performers List or eligible for performers List
Desirable- Further relevant dental Qualifications such as MJDF/MFDS
- Qualification in inhalation sedation
ExperienceEssential- Previous experience of working as a full-time dentist in either GDS or CDS in UK
- Previous experience of working with special care groups
- Sound up-to-date clinical knowledge, based on current best evidence. This knowledge needs to include the management of special care patients
Desirable- Experience in treating children and young people with varied needs
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a supportive, multidisciplinary team
- Experience of working in different settings within dental services such as general, hospital or community-based practice
- Use of an electronic dental record system
- Experience of undertaking clinical audit or service evaluation
Additional CriteriaEssential- Documented evidence of Hep B status
- Commitment to evidence-based practice/willingness to change clinical practice in response to evidence
KnowledgeEssential- Understanding of NHS dental services
- Understanding of the scope of Paediatric and Special Care Dentistry and when it would be appropriate to refer patients to the Community Dental Services
- Understanding of the wider scope of NHS dental services, including hospital-based services and general dental practice
Desirable- Understanding of the role of clinical governance in delivering clinical care
