Description

Job summary
The Department of Dermatology at Homerton University Hospital provides a full range of general and specialist dermatology clinics. The demand for these clinics has increased and the Trust wishes to further expand on the range of specialist clinics available.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified physicians for the substantive post of Consultant in Dermatology.

The post is offered flexibly at 4-10 Programmed Activities (0.4-1.0 WTE). Applicants are explicitly invited to apply for any contractual commitment within this range. The final job plan will be agreed with the successful candidate according to their contracted PAs, clinical interests and service requirements, within the agreed DCC and SPA framework. During normal working hours, the consultant team provides support for acute dermatology and urgent inpatient referrals. There is currently no fixed General Medical on-call commitment; however, the future provision of an out-of-hours/on-call dermatology service is under active discussion and may be implemented as service requirements develop.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide a comprehensive Dermatology service in collaboration with consultant colleagues, including inpatient and outpatient care, referrals, treatment, and telephone/electronic Advice & Guidance to local GPs.
  • Undertake adult dermatology outpatient clinics, with paediatric clinics incorporated where appropriate to applicant interest and service need.
  • Participate in skin cancer services, including outpatient clinics and MDT meetings where required, with clinical commitments adjusted accordingly.
  • Provide timely assessment and management of inpatient, urgent and acute dermatology referrals.
  • Share responsibility for delivering evidence-based standards of care and maintain continuing responsibility for patients under your care, including associated administrative duties.
  • Liaise effectively with GPs, external agencies and multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • Provide leadership, clinical supervision and support to junior doctors and dermatology nursing staff.
  • Contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate dermatology education.
  • Participate in future out-of-hours/on-call dermatology arrangements if introduced, subject to appropriate job planning and contractual arrangements.
  • Work in accordance with Trust policies, procedures, the Code of Behaviour, contractual requirements and Homerton's business plans.

About us
Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (HH) is an acute hospital located in the east London Borough of Hackney. The current Chairman is Mary Elford, and the Chief Executive is Ms Basirat Sadiq.

The hospital building opened in 1986, with Homerton Hospital Trust established in 1994. We provide training for medical students from Queen Mary College, and the University of London, and nursing and allied health professions training for students from City University and the University of East London.

Homerton became one of the first ten NHS foundation trusts in the country in April 2004. This allows the Trust to secure certain freedoms to facilitate innovation in the way services are developed and provided. As well as our Trust Board, we also have a Council of Governors comprised of governors representing the local community.

In 2011 the Trust integrated with City & Hackney Community Health Services thereby providing it with an opportunity to develop new service models and pathways that cross traditional organisational boundaries.

Employing over 3000 people, the hospital has approximately 500 beds and manages a 50-bed nursing home, Mary Seacole Nursing Home, in Shoreditch, East London. In 2022, the Trust saw over 300,000 people in outpatient clinics, and over 126,000 people were treated in the accident and emergency department. The Trust also had contact with over 280,00 patients and clients within the community, often in their own homes.

Job responsibilities
The postholder will provide a comprehensive Dermatology service, working alongside consultant colleagues to deliver high-quality care across inpatient and outpatient settings. The role includes general dermatology clinics, skin cancer services including 2WW clinics and MDTs, inpatient referrals, teaching and supervision of junior doctors, and participation in service development, clinical governance and quality improvement.

While this post is advertised as a 10 PA (1.0 WTE) Consultant Dermatologist position, the advertised job plan is indicative and intended to provide an overview of the anticipated DCC and SPA commitments. We welcome applications from less than full-time (LTFT) candidates and are happy to consider job plans ranging from 4 to 10 PAs, depending on the applicant's availability and service requirements.
