Job summary
We are looking to recruit a surgeon to specialise in shoulder elective surgery as well as general and subspecialty orthopaedic trauma management. The outpatient service for this service is a multidisciplinary clinic with input from physiotherapy, podiatry, radiology and sports and exercise medicine consultants and registrars. This service has grown over the past 24 months and the work associated with these clinics has led to a greater demand for our services.

Main duties of the job
This post will work with 10 other orthopaedic consultants and be part of the trauma and orthopaedic team at the Homerton Hospital. This post is part of the strategic plan to build on the success of our Trauma & Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine service. Expertise is required within both trauma and elective orthopaedic surgery, and this will include training in all aspects of shoulder surgery.

About us
Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is an integrated care trust which provides hospital and community health services for Hackney, the City and surrounding communities. The Trust provides a full range of adult, older people's and children's services across medical and surgical specialties. The trust operates acute services from a single site: Homerton University Hospital, which opened in 1986. Based on an aggregation of ratings across all of the core services provided from the hospital, the hospital has been rated by Care Quality Commission as 'Outstanding'. The hospital has almost 500 beds spread across 11 wards, a ten-bed intensive care unit and maternity, paediatric and neonatal wards. Community services are provided by staff working out of 75 partner sites in Hackney and the City of London. The trust has a separate registration to provide continuing health care at the Mary Seacole Nursing Home. The hospital has three day-surgery theatres and six main operating theatres for all types of general surgery, trauma and orthopaedics, gynaecology, maxio-facial, urology, ENT, obesity, bariatrics and obstetrics. We also have a surgical treatment room within the main theatres complex. The trust provides some highly specialised tertiary services, including bariatric surgery and the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit. It is one of London's designated perinatal centres and provides a range of highly specialised obstetric and neonatal intensive care services.

Job responsibilities
  • Senior leadership in the supervision and provision of the management and care of both elective and emergency patients including all administrative duties associated with patient
  • Provide a consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues and healthcare professionals within the Trust and Primary
  • Regular review and organisation of specialist upper limb trauma cases in collaboration within a multidisciplinary
  • Regular participation in regional (ICS) multidisciplinary meetings to discuss and plan management of complex
  • Working in close co-operation with the physio and sports and exercise medicine team to develop services and practices.
  • Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical
  • Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance and Risk
  • The trust is committed to a strong, robust appraisal and revalidation system and provides appropriate support. The doctor is expected to participate in annual appraisal activity to satisfy the revalidation process. We aim to support doctors to help them navigate this vital aspect of their professional
  • Participation in the trauma week on call rota. This is a 1:10 rota with prospective cover. The candidate will be expected to provide cover for colleagues in the event of unforeseen absence/sickness.
  • To ensure that all junior medical staff receive a programme of high-quality appropriate training, with relevant support by actively participating in the structured weekly teaching
  • To understand the importance, and assist in the achieving of, delivery and maintaining the 18 week referral to treatment
  • To provide orthopaedic clinical advice and support to GPs and colleagues from other Homerton Hospital departments when
  • Attend regular fracture clinics and orthopaedic clinics as per the job plan of the consultant colleague on sabbatical

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) within 6 months of interview / CESR or European Community Rights (3)
  • An appropriate higher - [specialty e.g. 'Orthopaedic'] surgical qualification
Desirable
  • Post-graduate doctorate (e.g. PhD or MD)

Experience and Clinical Skills
Essential
  • Clinical training and wide range of experience in orthopaedics and trauma training
  • Completion of fellowship scheme in upper limb (shoulder) surgery
  • Experience of teaching and training of junior staff, medical students
  • Experience in modern surgical techniques.
Desirable
  • Equivalent two years within Orthopaedics dealing with specialist upper limb (shoulder) surgery
  • Evidence of high volume trauma surgery
  • rauma fellowship, experience with subspecialty shoulder trauma & peri-prosthetic fractures

Leadership
Essential
  • Ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to service need
Desirable
  • Ability to motivate and to share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the orthopaedic service

  • Experience of teaching and training of junior staff, medical students

  • Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and understands the importance of ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME)

  • Understanding of principles and application of clinical research
  • Evidence of involvement in research and/or publications

Communication Skills

  • Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English
