Job summary
The National Heart and Lung Institute are delighted to seek applications for a 3-year Clinical Research Fellow post in cardiomyopathy and clinical trials at the Royal Brompton campus. The successful candidate will be strongly encouraged to undertake a post-graduate degree during the post.

The candidate will be supervised by Dr Brian Halliday and Professor Rasha Al-Lamee and coordinate a fully-funded clinical study investigating the natural history of dilated cardiomyopathy.

Main duties of the job

• You will work with the principal investigators to screen and enrol participants, carry out baseline and follow-up visits, supervise CMR scans and collect and record data in an accurate and systematic way
• You will complete and comply with reporting and progress requirements.
• You will work with the principal investigators to complete and update applications and reports to appropriate regulatory and ethical bodies.
• You will work with colleagues to complete trial data analysis in a robust and scientific manner.
• You will present findings to colleagues at internal and external meetings (travelling within the UK and abroad) and draft publications for submission to peer reviewed journals .
• The post holder will be responsible for accurate record keeping and documentation of results, and for preparing research reports and papers arising from his/her research.

Job responsibilities
This 3-year post offers the candidate an unparalleled opportunity for training in cardiovascular clinical trials, cardiac imaging and the management of patients with cardiomyopathy.

The research focuses on the academic strengths of the College and the world-leading expertise in dilated cardiomyopathy and clinical trial methodology. The post will facilitate early career success by placing a talented individual within a highly supportive environment and providing them with clinical research experience under expert supervision and mentorship.

This job is aimed at individuals with a track record in clinical cardiology and research and wish to receive further clinical training in cardiomyopathy and clinical trials.

The successful applicant will coordinate a fully-funded clinical study in dilated cardiomyopathy and heart failure looking at the natural history of disease and aiming to develop a novel patient reported outcome meausre.

The applicant will be trained in the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of clinical trials by the expert team of investigators and mentors. They may also have the opportunity to be trained if CMR.

They will be encouraged to undertake a post-graduate research degree and be provided with the necessary support and mentorship.

Key Responsibilities
Research:

• To ensure appropriate consent for research is obtained from the relevant patients.
• To complete and comply with reporting and progress requirements.
• To work with the principal investigators to complete and update applications and reports to appropriate regulatory and ethical bodies.
• To work with colleagues to complete trial data analysis in a robust and scientific manner.
• To present findings to colleagues at internal and external meetings (travelling within the UK and abroad).
• To draft publications for submission to peer reviewed journals.
• The post holder will be responsible for accurate record keeping and documentation of results, and for preparing research reports and papers arising from his/her research.
• To contribute to the drafting of grant applications.
• To develop research collaborations within the College and the wider community.
• To promote the reputation of the NHLI and Faculty of Medicine and related research centres and groups.

Committees and Meetings:

• To attend meetings and report progress on the project, (written and oral) both within the College and externally.

Clinical:

• To receive training in the care of patients with cardiomyopathy. The fellow will have the opportunity to attend clinics if desired and research commitments allow.

Other:

• To undertake any necessary training and/or development.
• The post holder will contribute to teaching medical students.
• To undertake any necessary training and/or development.
• Any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post as directed by the principal investigator.
• The post holder will be expected to contribute to the intellectual activities of their host department and to keep up to date with scientific advances in the field.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential

• Medical qualification: MBBS, MMBCh or equivalent.
• Advanced life support (ALS).
• Full General Medical Council (GMC) registration (or eligible for full registration).

Desirable

• Bachelor of Science (BSc) or equivalent.
• Desire to undertake postgraduate research degree .

Experience
Essential

• Evidence of outstanding academic and/or outstanding research achievements e.g. degrees, presentations at meetings, publications, awards and prizes. The evidence must demonstrate the potential to achieve the highest standards of scientific research and maintain an independent, high-profile academic research career.
• Evidence of participation in research e.g. clinical audit, clinical protocols; clinical.
• guidelines; clinical service quality improvement initiatives; experience during student electives, intercalated degrees and academic clinical fellowships
• Hold a current fitness to practice certificate, registration with licence to practice (or equivalent) from the relevant regulatory authority
• Hold a current medical indemnity policy that is valid where the training will occur
• Relevant experience of practice in clinical medicine

Desirable

• Previous experience of clinical trials.
