Job summaryThis is a Fixed Term Emergency General Surgeon with GI Interest Consultant post. The remit of the postholder will be to work within the multi-disciplinary team providing and further developing care for the surgical patients at Kings College Hospital Trust, to provide and develop surgical services to the Trust's surgical patients. In addition, the individual will be required to play an active role in the general workload of the Care Group while having a significant commitment to teaching and training of junior staff.
The post will be based at the Princess Royal University Hospital and the proposed Job Plan (up to 10 PAs) is attached. This is subject to review within 3 months of the postholder commencing in post.
The On-Call commitment is for a 1:8 rota, which is classed as Category A. There is a commitment to undertake routine job planned work on Saturdays or Sundays as part of the total job planned PAs.

It is envisaged that the appointee will contribute to the development and delivery of aspects of surgical services depending upon their interests and experience.
General Surgery is part of the Surgery, Theatres, Anaesthetics (STA) Care Group, Division C. The Department of General surgery is based at the Princess Royal University Hospital with some clinical activities at Beckenham Beacon and Orpington. The outpatient and administrative functions for the the Surgical team are based at Princess Royal University Hospital.
The Clinical Director (CD) of Surgery Theatres & Anaesthetics (Dr Swinda Esprit) is responsible for strategic direction and oversight of the care group.
The care group triumvirate consists of General Manager, Head of Nursing and the Clinical Director (Dr Swinda Esprit). There are 4 Clinical Leads within the Care Group (General Surgery, ENT, Pain and Anaesthetics).
Mr Shamsi El-Hasani is the clinical lead for surgery. There is a clearly defined pan-care group approach to governance with governance lead being Dr Roshmi Kumar

This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the care group
- Shared responsibility with the other colleagues for providing 24-hour, 7 day a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness as detailed in our contract.
- Provide clinical supervision of junior medical staff as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
- Responsible for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
- Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group's Management team where part of the service structure
- Contribute to the Care Group's research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework.
- Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, Clinical Governance programmes and Learning from Deaths.
- Take an active role in the formulation, implementation and monitoring of the Care Groups Business Plan. This may include assisting with discussions regarding service plans and developments with both internal and external agencies.
- Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for surgical services.
- Exercise professional leadership for all staff working in the specialty. This will include fostering and developing projects focused towards these ends and ensuring that the momentum of post qualification professional education and other appropriate training is maintained.
- Work in conjunction with clinical and professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for junior colleagues.
- Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manger/Clinical Director.
- Be aware of, and comply with,all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene.
- Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety

Person Specification- Qualifications: Registerable medical qualification, FRCS or equivalent (Essential); Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD) (Desirable)
- Registration: Full Registration with GMC, Name on GMC Specialist Register on date of taking up appointment, On the day of interview applicants must be within 6 months of CCT, in final stages of their portfolio pathway application, or be fully registered on the GMC Specialist Register (Essential)
- Training and Experience: Wide experience in all aspects of General Surgery, able to perform Laparoscopic Surgery and JAG accreditation (Essential)
- Administration: Experience in day-to-day organisation of surgical Service in a busy Teaching Hospital, Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills, Familiar with current structure of UK National Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes (Essential)
- Management and Leadership: Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams (Essential); Management course and/or qualification (Desirable)
- Audit and Quality Improvement: Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit, Must have undertaken and completed audit projects (Essential); Audit Publications (Desirable)
