Job summaryThe appointee will complete a 12 month placement within Trauma and complete on calls within Acute General Surgery. The Post is suitable for any Medical Graduate who has obtained GMC full registration in order to work in the UK. Previous NHS exposure (e.g. clinical attachments) is advantageous but is not essential. This post is a standalone Trust F1 post and the post holder will NOT be part of the South Thames Foundation School (STFS). Although these appointments are not accredited for training, the appointees will be expected to participate fully in the educational and training programmes within each department and the hospital. Appointees will have a named Educational Supervisor.
Main duties of the job- Taking patient histories and carrying out routine patient examinations
- Communicating with patients
- Provide day to day medical care under supervision
- Clerking patients admitted on emergency take days
- Participating in in-patient and day surgery operating lists
- Requesting investigations / treatments for patients
- Attending and undertaking ward rounds as required
- Providing cover for colleagues in an emergency and when on annual / study leave
- Participating in the training of medical students attached to the Firm
- Providing discharge summaries etc. to promote good liaison with General Practitioners
- Liaison with patients' relatives

Job responsibilitiesTogether with other colleagues to provide a service for patients. This includes all aspects of treatment and relevant management duties for the proper functioning of the Care Group. Shared responsibility with other colleagues for providing 24 hours, 7 days a week cover for the Unit on a rota basis. Responsible also for covering colleagues periods of annual leave and short-term sickness. Participation in Multi-disciplinary Meetings. Contribution to audit and clinical governance programmes. Responsible for outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with the Care Group management team. Contribute to the Care Group research interests in accordance with the Trusts R&D framework. Contribute to the audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality, clinical governance programs and learning from Deaths. Conduct all activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for service(s). Work in conjunction with clinical and other professional colleagues to ensure that the productivity of staff within the specialty is maintained and their job satisfaction is enhanced. This may include involvement in the appraisal process for peers and/or junior colleagues. Be aware of, and comply with, all Trust infection prevention and control policies, to include hand hygiene, personal hygiene, environmental and food hygiene. Prepare for and undertake the protective interventions that you are responsible for in a manner that is consistent with evidence-based practice and maintaining patient safety.
Person SpecificationQualificationsEssential- Medical Degree
- GMC Registration
- Full registration with GMC/GDC with License to Practice.
Desirable- Other higher degree or diploma (e.g., MD)
Training & ExperienceEssential- Experience in day to day organisation of Trauma services in a busy Teaching Hospital
Desirable- Research and publication record
- Distinctions or Prizes during undergraduate training
AdministrationEssentialDesirable- Familiar with current structure of Health Service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.
Audit & quality improvementDesirable- Experience of Audit
- Management course and / or qualification.
Personal Skills & AttributesEssential- Effective communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and co-operate with all medical and paramedical staff
- Professional attitude towards work, reliability, good record of attendance and tidy personal appearance.
Desirable- Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills.
