Job Summary
We are seeking a motivated, driven and committed Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist to join Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust's Children's Speech and Language Therapy service (CSLT) to provide a 3 day-per-week service (0.6wte) to the Probation Service on a fixed term contract.

The post holder will be embedded within a Probation Young Adult Hub, working alongside Probation Practitioners and partner agencies to support young adults (18 - 23) subject to statutory supervision, while benefiting from the strong clinical support available across Leeds Community Healthcare's wider CSLT service.

The role operates within a criminal justice framework characterised by issues of risk, compliance, enforcement, safeguarding, trauma and disadvantage.

The postholder will work closely with Probation Practitioners, Senior Probation Officers and other professionals to integrate speech, language and communication considerations into sentence planning and intervention delivery.

The post holder will regularly engage with individuals who may present with offending-related risks, emotional distress, trauma histories, neurodiversity and communication difficulties.

The role requires confidence in managing professional boundaries, personal safety and emotionally complex interactions.

Main Duties of the Job
In this role, you will use your specialist communication expertise to strengthen relationships, enhance communication safety, and stabilise environments for young people with complex social, emotional, communication, or developmental needs.

A key aspect of the role is providing consultation, training, and reflective formulation to professionals helping them understand how communication needs, developmental trauma, and relational difficulties interact.

You will support systems around the young people to adapt expectations, environments, and interaction styles and contribute to legal probation documents/plans.

You will demonstrate an ability to engage young adults who may be ambivalent, resistant or mistrustful of services, adapting communication approaches accordingly.

You will be able to apply trauma informed, psychologically informed and developmentally appropriate approaches when assessing and supporting individuals within the criminal justice system.

You will also advise Probation staff on reasonable adjustments, communication strategies and environmental adaptations to support engagement, compliance and safety

You will help develop communication friendly strategies that reduce conflict and build shared understanding across the team.
