Job Summary
The successful candidate will be a key member of the Blood Sciences management team. Reporting to the Operational Lead for Clinical Biochemistry, they will be responsible for the delivery of a 24/7 Clinical Biochemistry service across both hospital sites, supported by the wider management team and other key scientific and clinical staff.

To be considered for this Advanced Biomedical Scientist position in Clinical Biochemistry candidates must be registered with the HCPC, hold an MSc (or level 7 equivalent, e.g. IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma) and have significant experience in the discipline of Clinical Biochemistry. Employment on annex 21 Band 7 would be considered for candidates with significant specialist knowledge and relevant experience, who are working towards the required level 7 qualification. Experience of working at this level in a similar role, of leading large teams, of quality management/service improvement and of laboratory automation would be advantageous for this senior role.

The role is advertised as 0.8 wte (30 hours per week). Flexible working options can be considered.

Key roles and responsibilities include:

• Lead the Clinical Biochemistry service across both main sites, deputising for more senior staff when appropriate.
• Lead on quality, people governance and training related activity across Clinical Biochemistry.
• Lead a dedicated team of Biomedical Scientists and Associate Practitioners, coordinating the day-day technical activities of the laboratory.
• Contribute towards service development through active participation and leadership in a range of people governance procedures consistent with Trust policies and on-going projects as part of the NPP network of clinical laboratories.

Our Pathology services operate across two large university teaching hospitals in the Leeds Metropolitan area with a population of around 2.3 million and provide services both regionally and nationally. Construction on the new Leeds Children's Hospital is also planned, which will include all in-patient maternity and specialist neonatal services to become the largest single site maternity centre in the UK.

The successful candidate will be well supported by the wider scientific and clinical teams. The Blood Sciences Department is accredited to ISO15189 and by the IBMS as a training laboratory in both Clinical Biochemistry and Haematology.

The new pathology facility provides integrated, high-quality, efficient pathology services that homes state-of-the-art equipment and supported through a modern information system (LIMS). It is part of the New Pathology Partnership (NPP) working alongside Calderdale & Huddersfield Foundation Trust (CHFT) and Mid Yorkshire Hospitals Trust (MYHT).

Leeds is part of the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts (WYAAT) and West Yorkshire and Harrogate pathology network, offering fast, accurate testing services to hospitals in the region. This is to help to manage increasing demand and support investment in new technology and developing staff to improve services for patients. This allows us to improve how we diagnose illness for patients and help to meet the growing regional demand for specialist services like heart or neurosurgery.

The Department of Blood Sciences is seeking to recruit experienced and innovative Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Biochemistry to help shape, deliver and improve the service we deliver to our patients across the two sites. St James’s the brand-new facility will consolidate many of those pathology services that will benefit from being more closely co-located. This means we can deliver service improvements up to two to three years sooner.

What you will bring to the role
The successful candidate will be an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist in Clinical Biochemistry. Educated to master’s level, the candidate will need to be able to demonstrate their leadership abilities and knowledge within Clinical Biochemistry. Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills are a requirement of this role. We would be especially keen to hear from candidates with the following skills and experience:

• Advanced knowledge of Clinical Biochemistry.
• Experience of managing high volume workflows within a Clinical Biochemistry laboratory environment.
• Ability to ensure 24/7 service delivery and coordinate activities across multiple laboratory sites.
• Knowledge of UKAS accreditation and ISO 15189 laboratory standards.
• Experience of using Siemens automation and IT solutions.
• Experience of using WinPath Enterprise.
• A proven ability to troubleshoot complex analytical issues, liaising with clinical staff and manufacturers as required to manage non-conformances and robust IQC/EQA performance.
• Experience of coordinating rotas and of line managing and leading a team of scientific staff.
• Ability to develop and improve services utilising established service improvement tools.
