Job Summary
Responsibilities include all aspects of specialist Radiological Physics services, to which they are assigned by the Head of Section (e.g. safety-testing and calibration of X-ray equipment, risk assessing and dealing with abnormal equipment behaviour, radiation dose assessment for particular patients).

Main duties of the job
The Leeds teaching hospitals is one of the largest hospital trusts in the UK, as is its Department of Medical Physics and Engineering. The department has a strong track record of innovation both technically and commercially throughout the UK and internationally and provides support for clinical services at Leeds teaching hospitals as well as to other NHS organisations within the region.

The post-holder will primarily be based at the Leeds General Infirmary site but, as the role involves support to other NHS trusts, they will be expected to travel to various sites across the region.

Job Summary
We have an exciting opportunity within our department. This post provides a broad range of specialised, complex scientific and technical services and computing support within Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and, as contracted, to other providers.

The post holder will apply a broad range of skills and experience in Radiological Physics to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of physics services. This will require the post holder to work closely with medical, scientific and technical staff.

Responsibilities include all aspects of specialist Radiological Physics services, to which they are assigned by the Head of Section (e.g. safety-testing and calibration of X-ray equipment, risk assessing and dealing with abnormal equipment behaviour, radiation dose assessment for particular patients).

The provision of safety frameworks and advice.

The post holder will also act as lead Medical Physics expert and will be responsible for all aspects of the services under their management.

The post holder is expected to lead, develop, plan and manage their team of staff and the technical and scientific services provided.

They will also be responsible for the provision of teaching and training of NHS staff in basic and advanced aspects of the science of Radiological Physics.

As and when opportunities arise to do so, she/he is expected to initiate, develop, plan and direct appropriate Research and Development activity within the group.

What you will bring to the role
Plan, maintain and develop scientific and technical support to diagnostic X-ray imaging, including imaging quality assurance programmes, advice on equipment specification, commissioning new equipment, advice on and measurement of patient doses, and investigation of complex faults that may impact on image quality or patient safety.

Ensure physics input is provided to support the work of Radiology departments. Advise Radiology staff on a wide range of complex scientific, technical and clinical issues relevant to the use of X-ray equipment for patient care. Take operational responsibility for the physics services being managed.

Ensure that instrument quality assurance and quality control programme for X-ray equipment (such as CT scanners and other complex X-ray systems such as that used for interventional vascular radiology) is correctly carried out to required guidelines and standards. Ensure that all imaging and related equipment is functioning correctly.

Ensure that appropriate equipment is available and calibrated, for the monitoring of radiation levels, x-ray parameters and image quality.

Investigate and resolve complex equipment problems. Carry out fault-finding on complex equipment and other complex equipment to determine the cause of subtle or non-reproducible system faults. Liaise with suppliers regarding equipment breakdown, and arrange for the maintenance and servicing of identified items of equipment. Work closely with clinicians, radiographers, technical staff and other physicists for the evaluation and purchase of capital equipment, providing appropriate technical and scientific support. Take responsibility for the acceptance testing and commissioning of such equipment.

Ensure cover is arranged to ensure robust Radiological Physics service delivery.
