Senior Pharmacy Technician, IT, Purchasing & Distribution to join our Pharmacy team. This is an exciting opportunity for a registered Pharmacy Technician to play a key role in supporting pharmacy digital systems, medicines procurement, stock management and distribution services. The post holder will act as a Pharmacy System Administrator, providing specialist support for pharmacy IT systems and automation, maintaining data quality and system integrity, and contributing to service improvement and digital transformation initiatives.
Working closely with the Procurement, Stores and Distribution team, you will support the efficient and cost-effective purchasing and supply of medicines, assist with inventory management, supervise pharmacy support staff, and contribute to the development of pharmacy services. The role also involves training and supporting colleagues, participating in service development projects, and ensuring the safe and effective delivery of pharmacy services for patients across the Trust.
This position would suit a proactive Pharmacy Technician with strong IT, organisational and communication skills who is passionate about improving pharmacy services and delivering high-quality patient care.
Main duties of the job- Support the management and administration of pharmacy IT systems, ensuring data accuracy, system integrity and effective use of digital pharmacy applications.
- Assist in the procurement, purchasing and inventory management of medicines and pharmacy products to ensure continuity of supply.
- Support the operation of pharmacy stores and distribution services, including stock control, replenishment and management of medicine shortages.
- Produce reports, analyse data and support audits to improve service performance and regulatory compliance.
- Supervise, train and support pharmacy support staff within the purchasing, stores and distribution service.
- Contribute to service improvement projects, cost-saving initiatives and the delivery of safe, efficient and patient-focused pharmacy services.
- Work collaboratively with pharmacy, clinical and operational teams to ensure medicines are supplied safely and effectively across the Trust.

Job responsibilitiesJOB PURPOSE- To be an Ascribe Pharmacy Computer System Administrator and to support pharmacy staff in the day-to-day use of the Ascribe pharmacy information system and pharmacy automation.
- To assist in the cost effective purchasing and supply of pharmaceuticals.
- To provide cover for the duties of the Associate Chief Pharmacy Technician and the Pharmacy Purchasing Clerk during their absences.
- To assist with the development and implementation of pharmacy objectives & the service development plan relating to IT and Purchasing & Distribution.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES System Administrator Responsibilities- To be a Pharmacy Computer System Administrator under the direction of the System Manager and be responsible for the integrity of the pharmacy computer system
- Producing routine usage and cost reports for the Lead for Pharmacy Procurement and Chief Technician as required.
- Ensuring system housekeeping tasks are completed.
- To monitor the quality of data entry where appropriate, feeding back to individuals and area managers and referring to the System Manager as necessary.
- In the first instance troubleshoot any problems, using Ascribe system support and Trust IT - feeding back to the System Manager where problems are identified with either the system or staff use of the system.
- To provide support to the System Manager in the implementation of planned developments and enhancements to the system.
- To work in conjunction with the System Manager and Section leads to ensure that all staff are appropriately trained to use the pharmacy computer system competently.
- To be trained to the level of System Manager and deputise for them in their absence.
Purchasing & Distribution Responsibilities- To perform maintenance of the pharmacy system drug file and supplier database and preparation of data required for national, regional & local purchasing contracts.
- To be responsible for maintenance of the system integration with pharmacy automation equipment.
- To purchase pharmaceuticals and other items as required in the absence of the Pharmacy Purchasing Clerk.
- To assist the Chief Technician to ensure effective stock control.
- To assist the Chief/Lead Technician, Purchasing & Distribution with the development and effective implementation of planned service developments.
- To provide support to finance staff for invoice queries.
NVQ Assessor Responsibilities- To assess level 2 & 3 pharmacy services candidates.
- To plan and agree assessments with candidates.
- To monitor progress and review achievements of candidates, maintaining accurate records.
- To make judgements on evidence against national occupational standards and provide constructive feedback, guidance and support.
- To contribute to the effective running of the London Pharmacy Education and Training NVQ assessment centre by following the policies, procedures and guidance issued.
- Undertake and maintain CPD to ensure knowledge and skills are up-to-date in occupational and assessor national standards.
- To ensure that all tasks undertaken relating to NVQ are completed in a timely manner.
General Pharmacy Responsibilities- To ensure all staff are managed effectively including:
- Regular appraisal of performance & objective setting
- Identification of training needs, personal development planning & evaluation
- Ensuring all human resource policies, procedures & standards are understood & maintained.
- Ensuring all relevant documentation regarding the above is up to date.
- To participate in the recruitment of new staff.
- To provide cover for the top-up of drugs to wards/departments.
- To assist in the training of staff of all levels.
- To liaise with other staff within the department to ensure effective communication.
- To ensure a very high standard of customer care.
- To maintain current knowledge and keep abreast of recent developments.
- To maintain a Continuing Professional Development portfolio.
- To participate in the rota for Saturday and bank holiday services:
- To accurately dispense prescriptions for both in and out patients. Prescription types will include: outpatients; inpatients; discharges; controlled drugs and clinical trials. This will involve inputting of patients details into the Ascribe computer system and subsequently produce dispensing labels. The label, prescription and product are collected together and assembled. Any additional items such as spoons, bags etc are also added. The prepared items are checked for accuracy and passed to the pharmacist/accredited technician for final checking.
- To work in the dispensary for outpatients. This involves: taking prescriptions from outpatients and verifying their details; taking a current drug history from the patient, carer or parent. To give out the medication and counsel them on their medication to promote concordance. This will include the name of the medication, dosage, common side effects and administration details including use of devices. In addition, answer any queries or concerns a patient may have about their medication or refer to a pharmacist if appropriate.
- To assist with the collection of prescription charges. To take in cash and cheques from outpatients and to use the pharmacy till according to procedure.
