Job summary
We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Registered Nurse to join our Respiratory and Cardiology Ward. The successful candidate will work between Cherry and the Assisted ventilation Unit (AVU) within our department., reporting to the Ward Manager/ Senior Sister and accountable to Matron. They will be responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centred care to patients with a range of respiratory and cardiac conditions. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care, ensuring the highest standards of clinical practice and patient safety. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and skills within a supportive and dynamic environment. The post holder will participate in a 24-hour, 7-day rota, including long days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays, to meet the needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

• Deliver high-quality, compassionate, and patient-centred nursing care to patients with respiratory and cardiac conditions.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care programmes, ensuring care is evidence-based and tailored to individual patient needs.
• Monitor patients' conditions, recognise deterioration, and escalate concerns appropriately to ensure patient safety.
• Administer medicines and treatments safely in accordance with Trust policies, NMC standards, and local guidelines.
• Provide care for patients requiring respiratory support, including those receiving assisted ventilation within the Assisted Ventilation Unit (AVU).
• Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective care planning, treatment, and discharge management.
• Maintain accurate and timely patient records using electronic patient record systems.
• Support and educate patients, relatives, and carers, promoting health, wellbeing, and self-management.
• Contribute to the supervision and support of students, trainee staff, and healthcare support workers.
• Maintain a safe clinical environment by adhering to infection prevention and control, safeguarding, and health and safety policies.
• Participate in a 24-hour, 7-day rotational shift pattern, including long days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays.
• Uphold the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code and maintain professional competence through ongoing learning and development.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate programmes of care for patients with respiratory and cardiology conditions.
• Deliver high standards of nursing care, ensuring individual patient needs are identified and met.
• Monitor patients' physical and psychological wellbeing, recognising and responding appropriately to changes in condition.
• Administer medications, intravenous therapies, oxygen therapy, and other treatments safely and in accordance with Trust policies and NMC standards.
• Provide care for patients requiring respiratory support, including non-invasive ventilation and other specialist respiratory interventions within the AVU.
• Ensure accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation of patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes.
• Participate in patient admissions, transfers, and discharge planning to facilitate safe and effective patient journeys.
• Maintain patient dignity, privacy, and confidentiality at all times.

Person Specification
NMC registration
Essential

• Registered Adult Nurse with current NMC Registeration
• Ability to deliver safe, effective, and patient-centred care and Knowledge relevant to the role

Desirable

• Knowledge of quality improvement projects

Experience
Essential

• Excellent interpersonal skills, both verbal and written

Desirable

• Minimum 1 year Experience in a respiratory, cardiology, or acute care setting.
