Job summary
We are seeking a Consultant Cardiac Surgeon to join our dynamic and dedicated clinical team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced surgeon who is passionate about delivering high-quality patient care, advancing clinical excellence and contributing to the continued development of our surgical services.

Main duties of the job
The following work pattern should be regarded as provisional; the exact weekly timetable undertaken by the appointee will depend on operational issues within the Trust. The appointee is expected to work flexibly.
  • Monday: 09:15-10:15 LHCH Ward round (DCC, 0.25 PA); 10:15-14:15 LHCH SPA (SPA, 1.0 PA)
  • Tuesday: 09:15-10:15 LHCH Ward Round (DCC, 0.25 PA); 13:00-17:00 LHCH Outpatient Clinic (DCC, 1 PA)
  • Wednesday: 08:15-09:15 LHCH MDT (DCC, 0.25 PA); 09:15-13:15 LHCH Admin/Ward round (DCC, 1 PA)
  • Thursday: 08:15-09:15 LHCH MDT (DCC, 0.25 PA); 09:15-13:15 LHCH SPA (SPA, 0.5 PA)
  • Friday: 08:00-18:00 LHCH Theatre (DCC, 2.5 PA); Pre and post-operative time (DCC, 0.5 PA)
  • Weekday flexible: 08:00-18:00 LHCH Theatre (DCC, 2.5 PA); Pre and post-operative time (DCC, 0.5 PA)
  • Unpredictable emergency on-call work: 1 PA
  • Category A on-call 1 in 10: Weekend Ward Rounds 1:16 (0.25 PA)

About us
The Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provide medical and surgical adult cardiothoracic services to the people of Merseyside, North Wales, Isle of Man, parts of Lancashire and Cheshire; this catchment area has a population of approximately 2.9 million people. The unit is one of the largest of its kind in the country. Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital is configured to perform up to 2,200 heart procedures and 1,500 thoracic procedures, including in the region of 700 major thoracic operations. The full range of services for adult cardiothoracic surgical patients (except for transplantation) is provided. The thoracic aortic aneurysm service provides a comprehensive service with annual activities of 150-180 major aortic cases; a dedicated on-call service is provided by this group.

Job responsibilities
The job is intended to be a full time (11.75 PA) post in general cardiac surgery at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. Whilst no particular surgical specifics are stipulated, the potential for sub-specialty development in line with future advances and requirements of the Trust will be strongly supported. The draft job plan is outlined under the terms and conditions section. On-call for Cardiac Surgery is a 1 in 10 rota with a category A frequency payment. The successful candidate will have full secretarial support, a personal computer (training available if required) and office accommodation in line with other consultants in the unit. There is a significant commitment to research and audit and a training commitment to the resident doctors. The trust supports the annual appraisal process and routine GMC revalidation for all consultants and all consultants undergo an annual job plan. The appointee will be expected to work flexibly based on the needs of the Surgical Division and the Trust. The workload will be driven by the job planning process and be reviewed and changed appropriate to the requirements of the Trust by the Surgical Clinical Lead with the Divisional Head of Operations with ratification by the Medical Director. It should be noted that full mentorship / preceptorship will be provided to the successful candidate.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry (or planned entry) on the GMC Specialist Register via: a) Certificate of Completion of Training (proposed CCT date must be by August 2026) or b) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) or c) European Community Rights
  • An appropriate higher Cardiothoracic Specialist surgical qualification (FRCS or FECTS) or equivalent
Desirable
  • Postgraduate degree (eg MSc, MD, PhD)
  • Postgraduate diploma (eg PGCert)

Clinical Experience
Essential
  • Minimum 6 years of cardiothoracic surgery experience
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in cardiac for emergency and elective situations.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Desirable
  • A willingness to develop clinical skills and lead innovation in line with future cardiac surgical unit advances.

Management Experience
Essential
  • Evidence of ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists.
  • Ability to manage and lead a surgical firm.
Desirable
  • Evidence of quality improvement activities
  • Evidence of completion of a management course

Teaching Experience
Essential
  • Experience of teaching at Postgraduate level (e.g. delivery of teaching in an educational programme).
  • Ability to teach clinical and operative skills (e.g. logbook evidence of teaching junior colleagues).
  • Attendance of Training the Trainer Course.
Desirable
  • Experience of supervising higher surgical trainees

Audit and Research Experience
Essential
  • Experience of audit management (i.e. completed audit cycle)
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
Desirable
  • Peer reviewed publications
