Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Fellow in Vitreoretinal Surgery. This is a full-time post, although applicants who meet the person specification and wish to work less than full time are welcome and encouraged to apply.
The post is based primarily at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.
St Paul's Eye Unit is a vibrant and innovative department with an international reputation for excellence in clinical care, education and research. The successful applicant will join a team of more than 30 consultant ophthalmologists, including five clinical academics.
The Vitreoretinal Service comprises eight consultant vitreoretinal surgeons, two vitreoretinal fellows, one senior (Level 4) ophthalmology resident undertaking advanced vitreoretinal training, and two to three junior residents. The service provides a comprehensive tertiary vitreoretinal service, receiving referrals from across Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales, neighbouring district general hospitals and the Isle of Man. It delivers specialist care for the full spectrum of vitreoretinal disorders, while providing a local and regional emergency vitreoretinal service.
Main duties of the jobThe successful applicant will be an integral member of the Vitreoretinal Service and will participate in the vitreoretinal on-call rota on a 1 in 2 basis, providing first-line assessment and management of vitreoretinal emergencies with consultant support. The fellow will receive supervised surgical training across the full spectrum of vitreoretinal disease and will be expected to contribute actively to outpatient clinics, operating lists and emergency services.
In addition to clinical duties, the fellow will be expected to participate in clinical research, audit and quality improvement projects, contribute to postgraduate teaching, and support the education and supervision of resident doctors and other junior members of the multidisciplinary team.
At the completion of the 12-month fellowship, the successful fellows will have the opportunity to undertake an optional 2-to-4-week exchange programme with the University of Rwanda at Kabgayi Eye Unit. This unique experience provides exposure to a different healthcare system and the opportunity to observe and assist in the management of complex vitreoretinal pathology that is encountered less frequently in UK practice.

Person SpecificationAttainments and practical skillsEssential- Surgical training and experience in ophthalmology suitable for a VR fellow
- Competent and independent in cataract surgery
