Job summary
The post holder will provide high-quality, compassionate, patient-centred care to individuals receiving specialist palliative and end-of-life care within the ward setting.

Working as part of the multidisciplinary team, the Band 6 nurse will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care, ensuring patients and their families receive holistic support that meets their physical, emotional, psychological, and spiritual needs.

The role includes clinical leadership and supervision of junior staff, supporting the delivery of safe, effective care while role modelling professional standards and best practice in palliative care.

The post holder will contribute to maintaining a supportive and dignified environment, ensuring that care is aligned with patient wishes and promotes comfort, symptom control, and quality of life.

They will also play a key role in coordinating care, liaising with community and hospital teams, and supporting service development to meet the needs of patients within the temporary South Palliative Care ward.

Main duties of the job
  • Work flexibly across Maple Suite (LHCH) and Aintree Woodlands to meet service needs within the temporary South Palliative Care ward
  • Deliver high-quality, patient-centred palliative and end-of-life care, ensuring dignity, comfort, and respect at all times
  • Undertake comprehensive assessments, develop, implement, and regularly evaluate individualised care plans
  • Provide expert symptom management, including pain control and complex care needs
  • Act as a clinical role model and leader, supporting and supervising Band 5 nurses, healthcare assistants, and students
  • Coordinate care and ensure effective communication within the multidisciplinary team (MDT), including medical staff, allied health professionals, and community services
  • Support patients and families emotionally and psychologically, including during end-of-life care and bereavement
  • Ensure safe medication management, including administration of controlled drugs in line with policy
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant clinical documentation
  • Participate in shift coordination / nurse-in-charge duties where required
  • Contribute to quality improvement, audit, and service development initiatives
  • Support education and development of staff, promoting best practice in palliative care
  • Ensure adherence to clinical governance, infection prevention, and safeguarding policies
