Job summary
We require an exceptionally skilled leader to ensure the benefits of advances in genomics are consistently available to the entire population of the North West. The Medical Rare Disease Lead of the North West Genomic Medicine Service (NW GMS) will be a pivotal leader in the NW GMS team and will contribute to the formation of national genomics strategy as a member of national genomics network as well as regional transformation plans. The Medical Rare Disease Lead of NW GMS will assist the clinical, scientific and operational teams to deliver on the nationally set priorities as well as those set by the NW GMS Senior leadership team and the NW GMS Partnership Board. They will provide specialist clinical direction and leadership for the NW GMS, ensuring high-quality patient care, and promoting the embedding of genomics across rare diseases in all specialisms. They will also ensure the successful delivery of national and local transformation projects.

Main duties of the job
The Medical Rare Disease Lead of NW GMS will work with clinical scientific and operational teams to ensure high quality, safe care to our service users. They will provide expertise in rare conditions for all aspects of GMS function including laboratory reporting, multi-disciplinary meetings, service development and education - see detailed job description for further details. The post holder will also play a key role in national rare disease activities. The duties outlined below are not exhaustive and may change in consultation with the post holder in line with service development and organisational priorities.

Hours of Work: 2 PA per week (8 hours)

Base - Manchester and Liverpool NW GMS sites and remote working

The post holder must be willing to work flexibly to meet the needs of the service and travel as required for regional and national meetings. Onsite working for a proportion of the time is required.

What is a DBS Check?

• Standard DBS: Checks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.

The Costs for a DBS
At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), roles that require a DBS check are subject to a cost recovery policy. If, however, you withdraw from a conditional offer after the DBS process has begun, you will still be liable for the cost incurred.

Qualifications
Essential

• MBBS or equivalent
• Full registration with the GMC with license to practice
• Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent in a relevant specialty
• MRCP or equivalent

Desirable

• Higher research qualification - PhD or equivalent

Knowledge
Essential

• Experienced Clinical Genetics Consultant with credibility and the ability to command the respect of all clinical and non-clinical professionals
• Knowledge of the genomics clinical and scientific landscape in the NHS and plans for the continued development of the NHS Genomic Medicine Service

Desirable

• Clinician with national recognition within their own specialist area of genomics
• Academic track record including publications or research leadership

Professional and managerial knowledge
Essential

• A leading clinical genetics consultant with an understanding of advising on the clinical actionability of complex genomic data up to the level of whole genome sequencing
• The ability to work collaboratively and to deal with ambiguity and complexity
